I don't understand how you don't understand this. Maybe someone sucks at video games? Maybe they want to be in the fandom of a video games that's outside their genre (say, horror or fps or something). if they watch the LP and the person playing goes through the whole storyline, I don't see why the person watching shouldn't be in the fandom if they enjoyed the LP!

I mean, they certainly shouldn't be calling themselves gamers, but writing fic or drawing art or squeeing over characters or ships? Yeah, I don't see the problem.

I once read Custer's Revenge dubcon and I was all like you clearly do not truly understand what's going on in Custer's head like a person who actually played that game would. It was really clear they were working with an LP and half-remembered scenes from They Died With Their Boots On

Precisely how does actually playing a game affect somebody's ability to interact w/ the fandom for that game? I mean, the things are entirely separate. Fandom approaches the game primarily as a piece of entertainment, not as a game. And that's a fact and not something you can really change. Who gives a shit if they play or are good at the game? Why does that matter one little bit?

Depends on the game. There's a good number of fans in the KH fandom that have never played the games. The story is so damn convoluted now that I can't really blame them.

Well, if they are a fan of the story of the game that they got through the LP, why not? You don't have to be a fan of the gameplay itself if there's a rich enough story. They can still draw fanart of the character designs they enjoy, write fanfic and meta about the characters and their decisions and all that.

Erm. While books, music, and TV shows are more or less available for free with an internet connection, video games are not. Consoles and the games themselves can be prohibitively expensive for a lot of people, but they're still interested in the story and characters so they find LPs in order to access the material they'd otherwise be barred from. Not to mention, some people don't have the time to invest in actually playing a video game, or they're not interested in the play style, or they just plain suck at video games - and telling them they can't be a "fan" despite watching LPs and doing the research is rather elitist of you.

For a lot of older games, especially ones that didn't sell all that well and are regarded now as cult classics, LPs are the only way to experience the game without having to pay more than double what the game's actually worth. Yeah, you could try an emulator, but some games just don't run well on those.

I'm with noods on this. If you put in the time to watch an LP and listen to some horrendously dull motherfucker try to be funny and talk over the game, you deserve at least some credit for the effort. Playing the actual game is best, but I fully realize that's not an option for some.

Personally, yes. I prefer playing games myself because gameplay is a huge part of VGs for me. And there's that whole feeling of accomplishment when I defeat hard bosses or clear a higher difficulty *eyes Metal Gear anything* and I refuse to watch LPs.

But that's just me. Some people just aren't very good at video games, or don't like playing them. For whatever reason. If they still want to experience the characters/story - especially in RPGs, which can be extremely long - why begrudge them that if the LPs are available anyway? There are people who haven't watched entire TV series or read every last comic issue in a series, but if they do all the proper research, so what?

( you're so right about MGS4, I'll give you that. But again the feeling of accomplishment - even the OH HEY I MANAGED TO ACTUALLY STAB VAMP WITH THIS SYRINGE - is still there. :))

I am not in any videogame fandoms (I don't play video games and I have no interest in starting to play them) but I have really enjoyed watching my husband play Mass Effect and some other games he purchased recently. I got pretty interested in the storline and would watch all the "movie" parts of the game and get him to choose different conversation options if I was interested in the subject. I had a really good time doing that. I think with some research I could pretty easily write fic for that game if I wanted to, and I don't see why I or anyone else in that position shouldn't. *shrugs*

I don't know, I mean I absolutely love the universe of the Portal series; I wouldn't say I'm in the 'fandom', but the story telling and characters - I feel - are extremely well done.

But I've never played either of the games; First Person Perspective gives me a headache and makes me feel nauseous. I have no idea why this is, but it means I can't play any FPS. It's annoying, but not the end of the world, although I find it odd the fact I can't play games like that means I somehow can't like them? Or talk to others that like them?

The gamer in me wants to agree, but I'm not gonna tell people to stop liking what they like. You can usually get the story from watching LPs, you're not missing much on that front. Although, in some fics I've read, I can tell the person hasn't played the game from the little things.
