It does seem like Gatiss is being groomed to take over though, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)I dunno that Gatiss would make a terrible showrunner though. The episodes he writes are definitely lackluster, but his ideas and characterization is pretty good so if he was more of a backseat kind of guy...

Would you care to elaborate?
For the record, I'm only familiar with Gatiss' work on Sherlock, and I like it well enough, but I'm interested to hear what problems you have with him.

I'm also slightly worried that he'll take over/continue some Moffat plots/characters/pairings I haven't been to pleased with, since him and Moffat are tight.
Yeah, that I do agree would suck... [sigh]

Gatiss's best work for New Who is "The Unquiet Dead" which is a decent episode. But like... he also wrote "Victory of the Daleks" and "Night Terrors" which are really bad, so... yeah.
I cringe to think of what Doctor Who might be like under him.

Yeah, true...
Yeah, "Unquiet dead" was pretty good, but, yeah, those other two are... not.
Mighty Morphin Power Daleks!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)Now, if Gatiss had to actually write lots of big plotty episodes, he would utterly suck. But if he was a different kind of showrunner, one who delegated more work to other writers...I think he could pull it off.

Anyway, people were over the moon about Moffat becoming showrunner when it was first announced, because his episodes so far had been absolutely brilliant. RTD's own episodes were really uneven, but I was much happier about the show in general when he was showrunner. I don't think there's a direct correlation between the quality of someone's episodes and how well they perform as showrunner. I'm ... tentatively hopeful, even though it could of course be as bad as you fear.

ETA: Although it would work even better for the Master.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 03:29 am (UTC)(link)I think it would be too on-the-nose perfect for the Master. For Ten, it'd have sufficient reversals and defiance and ironies to make a very metaphorical song a subtle meaning, IMO.
