Random Linguistic Question

[personal profile] bombay 2013-02-24 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are you from (or where/how did you learn English), and how do you say "coupon"?

(I'm from Southern California and say "kyuu-pon;" partner's from New Hampshire and says "coo-pon.")

east texas, and i've always said "coo-pon"

New England area, and generally it's "coop-on" but I have heard "cue-pon"/"kyuu-pon" before.

"Coo-pon". It's like our "cupón", but accented on the "u".

I'm ESL, from Chile, and my English is a weird mix of accents due to different teachers and self-education >>;;

Wyoming. I say it "coo-pon" unless I'm making fun of my Southern relatives, in which case I say "koo-pin," with a hard k.

From England, and I say coo-pon. But then, I have an extremely lazy accent, so shorter pronunciations are the go to.

ETA: And I have just realised, I might say it out loud as coo-pon, but apparently when I read the word my mental pronunciation is kyuu-pon. Huh.

Northern New England. I've heard "coo-pon" most often, but also "kyuu-pon" and "coo-pun".

Norway, and about 13 years of formal English education...

Pretty close to: qupoon possibly cupoon.

If I could remember all the pronunciation writing thing I could spell it out, but I don't. Damn it is hard to write how you pronounce words in your second language...

*I can't for the life of me remember what it is in English in Norwegian it is: SoundWriting. The thing in the dictionary that tells you how to pronounce words....

Washington... Though, if we're considering sources of English language influence, my parents are from AZ & CA? And, I say it "coo-pahn". More of a long 'a' sound than an 'o'.

COO-pon, and I'm Australian. We barely tend to use them here, though - it was weird staying in the States and getting all these coupons at the supermarket. I was staying in southern Arizona, that may have affected my pronunciation.

Nevada, kyuu-pon.

From Washington, DC, and I say "coo-pon." I think it's said both ways here, because I've had this discussion with people in real life. (One girl in my class one year said she hates "coo-pon" because it sounds phony and snobby and like it's trying to sound French... uh, yeah IDK she might have just been a bit weird.)

Coo-pon. My dialect is effectively a mix of Michigan and Inland North, combined with my slightly off-kilter speech patterns due to my hearing loss. A lot of people think I'm European for some strange reason.

Kansas, kyoopon.

I suppose it technically doesn't make sense to be pronounced that way, but that's just how I've always heard it.

From England, and I say coo-pon. If someone said kyuu-pon I'd have to ask for clarification on what they meant.
