How about the people for whom doing something 'exciting and new' it just isn't worth the risk?

How about my roommate with anxiety problems who has days where she can barely go to the grocery store without feeling overwhelmed? How about the friends I've known in abusive family situations where the computer is the only outlet they get to make friends and even that is heavily controlled?

How about the people who don't have the money to go out to movies or dinners or stuff like that? How about the people who just DON'T LIKE dealing with being in public with crowds and cars and strangers everywhere?

But really, none of the above matters that much because no one should have to JUSTIFY doing what they like to do with their own time.

I'm willing to bet the number of people who are going to venture out of their comfort zones to appease what YOU think they should do with their lives isn't all that high either. There's nothing WRONG with people who embroil themselves in fandom.

Maybe it's not particularly healthy to talk entirely in Star Wars quotes or something of the like, but that doesn't mean that I should feel ashamed or like I have less of a life because I like to spend my evenings comfortably at home on my computer talking to people I like about stuff I like.

I shouldn't have to be ASHAMED of how I live just because it's not what you would consider a good life if you were me. You're not me. So... go live your own life and don't talk to me if you don't like mine.

#9: Amen, amen, a-fucking-men. The treatment of copyright for fanart vs. fanfic is such a bullshit double standard.

[identity profile] chronophobe.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well at least it's progress. Better this than nothing I think.

[identity profile] freege.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
11. The picture... She has killed me. Killed me dead with laughter.

12. Haha. Love. So much love. <3

15. I get how you feel. While I do like the occasional smut, I'm just not that big a fan of it. I end up skipping those bits in fics sometimes.

16. Wait... Are you talking about a ...life? I remember... I downloaded one once. But I lost it when I forgot to back up my computer. Woe. *tear* >__>;

Very true. Slow progress is better than no progress. We'll get there, eventually.

[identity profile] yi-ui-min.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to say about your post. I just wanted to let you know that your icon brightened my life, and is pretty much really amazing. :D

28. Not just in fandom, but on the net generally I tend to see a lot of girls being OMG LESBIAN or Bi, without actually having ever made out with a girl, except maybe a kiss with their equally OMG LESBIAN best friend.
It's just a fashion, and I think it's insulting towards those who really are gay

And, oh god, the only thing Jesus Christ Superstar was ever good for was inspiring a Mr. Show parody.

Well. The movie version made the 13 year old me have sexual fantasies about Jesus. So, that's two things.

( I stopped reading to say this...)

FUCK YES.
Everything. All of it.
Fucking Urinetown!? You're awesome. I've never met anyone who has seen it. They get turned off by the name. xD
( We should be best friends. )

THAT WASN'T YOU?? XD although I guess if you had done it you would have made it a little more sparkly with photoshop...

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I relate to her in the same way the secret-poster does, and I still think she's kind of dull. I wish they had done a little more with her rather than have her just be the generic straight man/woman(/person?).

[identity profile] roomofawakening.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
8. I don't think so either but I still love it to death. That sounds kinda contradictory.
18. I didn't think he was hot with/without makeup/a shirt/that ridiculous cat hat/whatever. I didn't pay attention to his voice either... I really don't get why people think he's so hot! That's a nice fanart of him though <3
20. I do that but with pairings. I feel you. D+
26. Thaaat sucks. But seriously, if your only Naruto fandom friend would dump you for not liking his/her OTP? Go make new friends! Or if you don't want to, just uhh, avoid the subject? Bring up something else? Get an OTP and spamshare that baby? (I know you can pick one~! KakaIru, SasuNaru, LeeSaku, ZabuHaku... I like Iruka/Gaara myself >_<)

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure it's Baccano! The hat + train references + the mod of [livejournal.com profile] baccano mentioned wanting to turn over the comm to someone else because she was losing interest clue me in.

Don't worry, you're doing a great job. There's no need to feel "wrong" about it. And thanks for helping us all get started!
I'm positive I know what fandom this is, but somehow I don't think it's the best idea to announce it here. The clues are very subtle. I think only the people who need to know will figure it out.

I mean, yeah, I'll agree that the uhh concept of the genderless girl is great? It's just that uhh, she was Haruhi. And Haruhi's booooring andfgkjadghdkhf like in Ouran it was alright because she HAD the crazy strange people TO play the straight-thing to, but without them...

Nobody, seriously nobody, would watch a show of just Haruhi. She's just not interesting enough ahfgkajdfkjf

(Anonymous) 2007-09-06 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
OP of 16 is filled with unwarranted self-importance.

[identity profile] sirhellsing420.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Ouran was funny to me, as was Fumoffu. I haven't seen much of Guu but what I have I liked. I haven't watched Gurren Lagann nor do I have any interest in it, heh. And I can't say anything about the last three series because I've never seen them.

Well considering I agree with you on some of the anime you've watched, but I'm afraid I still have to say my opinion feels that Gintama is funnier than Ouran or Fumoffu. But to each his/her own, I guess. ;P

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Wait wait wait. Since when is Haruhi asexual?

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sniper Wolf! From Chris Doucette!

Seriously, though, I'm a fan of her.

[identity profile] sky-pirate-tat.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)

13. XD I do that too! I once printed my friend's fic before I went to the dentist (to get my wisdom teeth pulled). It helped me calm down to read her fic before the surgery.

16. Same here. Fandom is fine as a hobby but if it's all there is to your life. . .

28. I think there are just as many lesbians/bi girls in and out of fandom. Girls are more open about their sexuality than men are inside and out of fandom. Plus, from what I've heard guys who are gay/bi keep their sexuality hush hush in fandom because of the bizzare sort of yaoi fangirlsfor certain reasons.

[identity profile] wao.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
#11: That has to be the best image I've ever seen used in a fandomsecrets secret before. Shit.

#19:
I was thinking of making almost exactly the same secret :O :O

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think that was an incorrect use of the term. I think they meant someone who doesn't fit into assigned gender roles, at least from the context.

Re: 23

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she's biologically a girl, despite not really caring what people think of her as (her dad's a cross dresser), but she's still considered "the girl" by a decent amount of the fandom I've had exposure to.

8 & 18

[identity profile] rktikfox.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
8. And to think Araki art could have remedied ALL of what you described. |3

18. Michael Lindsay could make a frog sexy. Has he tried yet? Despite having lost interest in the Naruto fandom, I still have a soft spot for Kankuro
