Yeah, maybe she doesn't deserve the hate she gets when compared with others, but she's a very vicious and evil person all on her own. There's not really much excuse for what she did, 'used' or not.

Yeah...when I see these secrets, I have to wonder if people forget that she killed plenty of people on her own before she even met Light, without being told to, just to get his (as Kira) attention. And was totally uncaring about it.

She's not a mean person, but that doesn't make her a good person.

Yeah, she is definitely messed up and evil, but she still gets a lot of crap Light doesn't get even though he did the same things and possibly worse. But I agree, the idea that she did what she did because Light used her doesn't fly.

I really like her, in the way I sometimes like messed up and evil characters.

I used to like Misa back when I fangirled over Light and L lol. I used to ship female characters with male characters that I liked for some reason. Other than that, I really don't think she's that great of a character at all :/

Misa is my favorite character in Death Note, always will be. ♥ She's just so deeply messed up, and she ended up turning to the worst possible person in the world to devote herself to, I find her to be one of the most tragic figures in the series.

I always liked Misa, possibly for the sole reason that she was so universally hated. I think the reason she's so hated for being an obnoxious fan is because she hit a little too close to home for some viewers.

Everyone on that show was pretty much a horrible person, so Misa being annoying and not a guy just made her more hated.

I hated her the first time I watched Death Note, but for some reason, the second time around all I could feel was pity. She quartered her lifespan for Light, and never once did he give a shit about her.

Misa's petty, vicious and awfully stupid, but her end in Death Note was pitiable.

Her end in Death Note? She got absolutely no punishment for what she did, she was completely let off the hook, which is unbelievable. Yes, she quartered her lifespan, HOWEVER, when Rem sacrificed her life for her, Rem's remaining years transferred to Misa. Quartered or not, Misa was probably doing just fine. And in the end, she apparently just committed suicide, which, well, sucks for her, but her end was totally her choice.

Misa was not a victim, yet the narrative, or at least the other characters, seem to treat her like a victim. Tbh the only one who treated her like she deserved was Light - as an annoying stalker (with a weapon of mass destruction and a Shinigami bodyguard) who threatened to kill anyone else he dated if he didn't accept her.

I don't hate Misa, I'll just say that, but she's just such a transparently terrible character and I think people pick up on that? The writer obviously didn't give a single fuck about her and was content keeping her to just a flimsy plot device and not a actual breathing character. Which makes me dislike the writer, but I can't blame others for just hating the character instead. DN is riddled with awful people, but be fleshed out enough and some people will love you no matter what. See: Draco in Leather Pants. You don't even have to be that fleshed out, come to think of it.

I think I might actually like Misa. I might "like" every character in this series. What. WAIT EXCEPT MELLO- HAHAHAHAHA phew. Fuck that guy.

Light's a bastard, but he only used her because she gave him no other option. She wouldn't leave him alone and threatened to kill his other girlfriends.

I hate when people act like Misa is a victim. Um, no. She is a killer and killed even more indiscriminately than Light did. She's not a child, either, she's older than Light, and yes, she's had a tragic past with her parents being murdered, but she's also incredibly wealthy and has a lot of privileges.

Not that you can't like Misa. But I find her less sympathetic than Light himself, and it just kills me that in the manga she gets off free while Light is treated like the only villain. Even if Misa was following his orders, she wanted to do it with passion, and her kill count is technically much higher than Light's.

first of all, no one in DN is 100% good. everyone is a certain shade of gray. misa was used, yes, but she was conscious of what she was doing and, as people pointed out in this thread, she killed people before meeting light. she had a dark past, and her most beloved person used her like a tool, but that doesn't excuse her of her actions.

theeeeeen again, even if everyone in that series has their issues, why does most of the fandom target her? first, she's a girl. a girl dating light. who nearly all the yaoi fangirl fandom ships with L. it's the same that happens to kairi in kingdom hearts, for example. but then, i think there's something else: misa acts very, very different to the rest of the characters. she's very smart, yeah, but her "kawaii" ways, use of third person, etc, contrast a lot to the rest of the intelectual, more serious characters. i think that's why a lot of people are annoyed by her.

i quite like Misa, despite recognizing her flaws, i still find her cool, and well, i have something for "cute yet twisted and deadly" characters like her. i love L, too. it depends on the person. and that's what makes DN so interesting - everyone makes something different out of it. and that's okay.

As everyone has already mentioned, there are no characters in Death Note that could be considered morally good, but the main characters have huge fanbases even though they're all varying degrees of terrible. I think fans who are looking at their personalities are probably choosing favorites based on how interesting/smart they are, instead of whether or not they agree with their philosophies. There are also fans who choose based on how pretty the character is. Some people feel uncomfortable liking or idolizing a morally reprehensible character, so they alter their interpretation to fit their own values.

The complaints I usually see about Misa are that she's annoying, selfish/callous and stupid. She stands out as a louder and more energetic character in a series that's pretty stoic and quiet, but she's really not much worse than the typical female anime lead. Questionable morality is nothing new in the series (it's pretty much the point,) maybe it's an issue here because there was no attention called to it (not in the obvious way that was done for the other characters.) As for her stupidity, she is a somewhat capable person in a show full of geniuses, and actually not too bad a strategist, she just acts childish and ditsy because that's sometimes considered charming. So yeah, there are some reasons to not care about her or find her annoying, but I can't understand why people take such issue with her while defending any of the other main character.

Been awhile since I saw the series, but I loved Misa, simply because she was so perfect for Light, utterly dedicated to him without having any illusions about what a monster he was, because she was a monster, too. They could have made Misa just a hapless victim grateful to Light, forced to do wicked things because of her blind devotion to him, but no, fuck that. Misa was just as ruthless as Light, just as intent on getting what she wanted by any means necessary, and what she wanted was Light, whether he used her or not. I loved that she was so straightforward in her selfishness, and had no lofty pretenses about what she was doing being right in a general sense. In some ways, she was the most honest person in the whole damn mess, and, like Light, almost tragic in the end, for all her evil. Just like Light was an example of justice gone very wrong, Misa was an example of love that was just as fucked up.

Also she was hilarious and girlfriend had a fierce fashion sense.

Eh, she's pretty evil, but on my second watch through, she was the most likable character. Light and L are the serious, for-the-greater-good kind of evil, while she is simply greedy and lacking in empathy. Weirdly, that was far easier to sympathize with.

she wasn't all that innocent, but i think a thing people hate about her (at least what I've heard before)is that she wars things that would be considered inappropriate. Though I am ok with the character.

I've always loved Misa, not as a person but as a character. I think there are plenty of reasons not to love her as a person (her lack of empathy, mass murdering, her annoying manner and so on), but fewer reasons to hate her as a character, especially as she's not the only monster in the show. We know stuff about her backstory and - in part *because* of the annoying act she puts on - she has several different layers to her as well. She's really interesting to me, and I think a lot of people tend to overlook her - they tend to see her cutesy act and nothing else, or contrast her intelligence with geniuses such as Light and L (and honestly, because she isn't as clever as them, she's stupid? She tracked down Light!). It's a damn shame.

Her being female and "dating" Light also is a problem for some/many people, not that they'll necessarily admit or even recognise it...

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I was so happy to see this secret, OP! I'm not really in the fandom much so I don't tend to see other Misa fans, who are hard enough to find already. :(
