So...Oscars

[personal profile] morieris 2013-02-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised there wasn't a thread yesterday (or I missed it, power was out)

Like the winner, F!S? No? Going to hit me with that trademarked indifference?

I should have just turned it off after the failure that was Animation, but Best Director was good.

I haven't watched, I just gathered from Tumblr that Seth was a pig and Jennifer Lawrence was adorable.

Best actress was another disappointment, though not unexpected.

That sort of sums it up. And Anne Hathaway was sweet and adorable.

Meh. Same old, same old. Mostly boring and MacFarlane trying way too hard to be edgy. I think the only part I liked was the puppet version of Flight.

Jennifer Lawrence was awesome.

Some of Seth's jokes were ill-conceived. However Tumblr rising to the defense of some of the most culturally powerful people in America because oh no he made some mean jokes about them is hilarious. It was a great big middle finger to the supposed sanctity of Hollywood's annual circlejerk and I think it did more good than harm considering. And I'm someone who can't stomach Family Guy.

Re: So...Oscars

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say people were probably more upset about him joking about a 9-year-old girl being molested than "giving the middle finger to Hollywood's annual circlejerk".

I'm rather "meh" about it.

I'm not entirely happy with Brave winning, especially since, while it had qualities, it didn't deserve an Oscar. Yes, it was pretty and well animated, but the plot was a bit off and I'm getting a bit annoyed by Pixar winning all of the Oscars. I'm not sure that, had Brave been made by another studio, it would have still gotten the Oscar, but maybe that's just me.

Best actor, I knew Day-Lewis would win, even if I haven't seen Lincoln nor intend to in the near future. Best actress, I was a bit sad for Emmanuelle Riva, but Jennifer Lawrence is a good actress. Now, I hope this win so early in her career won't do her prejudice. Anne Hathaway's win was expected as well. All in all, this was a rather unsurprising ceremony, in terms of winners...

Regarding the ceremony itself, though... I couldn't watch it, since in my time zone it started at 3 am, but the reactions I've seen about Seth McFarlane's jokes really don't make me regret staying up to watch it. The Boob Song video alone... Sigh.

Too bad The Hobbit didn't get Best Hair and Make-Up though!

Yea, that was disappointing. :( Maybe for Desolation of Smaug, or for There and Back Again. (Or numerous somethings, depending on how the film turns out and what else is released that year.)

Ken Taylor was robbed and Argo was an abomination of American propaganda on roughly the same level as Wag the Dog, only without the satire.

Re: So...Oscars

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
If Hollywood had wanted to award American propaganda, they had plenty of options this year. Argo won because it was Hollywood propaganda, not because it was American propaganda.

Argo was a national treasure and Ken Taylor should be shot for treason simply for going against it.

I can't believe a movie based on an autobiography focused on the guy who wrote the autobiography that is like so egregious it's not like the Canadian ambassador got a hell of a lot of screentime or anything

I didn't watch it because I find watching those things kind of painfully awkward and looking at the news write ups and comments I'm REALLY glad I didn't watch it after Seth and the jaw situation with VFX

Best Director should have also been a victory for the artists but instead the winner turned it into a slap in their faces. I wish anyone else had won.

*shrug*. i haven't watched the oscars since 1999. and from what i've heard it gets crappier and more bloated every year.

I'm glad Brave one. I have a feeling if it hadn't been in the running, WiR would have won, and ehhhh...I love the movie, but I personally think Paranorman was the best animated movie of 2012. At least the mother/daughter story was given a nod.

The only time I was ever invested in an Academy Award was when How To Train Your Dragon got nominated for Best Score. Back then I thought that the movie's music was the epitome of what orchestra and traditional instruments could do, and was very disappointed when it lost to another movie.

Never cared about the Oscars that much since.

My only big wish was for Jennifer Lawrence to win, and I actually screamed when that happened. Made my parents watch The Hunger Games in celebration yesterday (they understand how much I love her).

I really love how different films won for the six big categories (acting, BP, and director). Apparently that's only happened twice in history.

Award shows bore me and I really don't care about Hollywood congratulating itself. I only watched for the Bond tribute and was underwhelmed by it. I turned it off after that because I didn't care about any of the awards and don't think Seth McFarlane is funny.

I watched it on Hulu today knowing the winners already, which was fun because I knew which face to focus on when the names were called. It was really cute seeing people's faces light up when they were called. Christoph Waltz was especially adorable.

Also I loved Jennifer Lawrence tripping because a) she was so chill about it and b) Hugh Jackman swept in to offer his hand like a gentleman boss.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-02-27 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I like Spike Lee's "fuck the Oscars" speech myself. The boob song was embarrassing. And I wanted Paranorman to win because having 7/12 awards go to a single studio, and 10/12 go to movies sharing a common production method is an animation monoculture.

Re: So...Oscars

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, time for me to vent! I enjoyed it, and I am usually bored to death by award shows. I liked how they had each presenter give out two awards, and I just about fell off the couch when Dan Radcliffe and JGL started singing and dancing :D

I am embarrassed by some of the outrage over Seth McFarlane. Him being mildly offensive was the punchline, I prefer that to the average hour of television being unimaginatively racist and sexist as the default. It's not that some of the things he said didn't bother me but it was jarring to come online and find tumblr frothing at the mouth over things they seemed to have imagined?

It really bothers me when people take things that are mildly annoying (talking about a girl as a future trophy girlfriend, exoticizing brown people with accents) and then just make shit up to make it sound worse (CHILD MOLESTATION, GROSS SEXISM AGAINST SELMA HAYEK) because the original slight wasn't inflammatory enough.

And the people freaking out over how upset Charlize Theron looks over the opening number. The shots of women being offended by the boob song were PRERECORDED. The joke was that it was sophomoric, the actresses were IN ON IT. Get it together tumblr, jeez...
