Sappy scenes that make you cry

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
What are some scenes in shows/movies/books/etc that you know are ridiculously sappy and/or OTT, but make you genuinely cry anyway?

I don't actually think it's sappy, but if I want a good cry I go straight to Oscar & Lucinda. ;_______;

Too many Doctor Who scenes, but I think Tinkerbell Jesus takes the cake. IDK, I theoretically know it's completely idiotic and narmy but I can't help myself.

When Ten regenerates into Eleven. I have not had the heart to continue watching because of that.

Ok so the movie Mulan came out when I was in high school, like 16 or whatever. The point is that I was too old to be crying at Disney films. I went to see it with my family and by the end of the movie, the scene with Mulan and her father really made me cry, like, a ridiculous amount. I didn't really think about it until I was well out of college but I think the reason I was so moved by that scene was because I always wanted my dad to be proud of me and I felt like he never was, and that no matter how well I did in school or at my job or whatever he would never be satisfied with that. Everyone wants a parent to be proud of them, you know?

Don't know if that counts as "sappy" or not but you know, Disney does go out of their way to evoke emotion out of their audience so it probably is

I tend to be really bad at judging when something is objectively sappy unless it's beyond everything imaginable. But I cry at a lot of the typical stuff the writer/director wants you to cry at. Less so for books than movies.

I'm such a broken record on this subject, but Frodo and Sam. "FRODO WOULDN'T HAVE GOT FAR WITHOUT SAM".

It's been mentioned, but Mulan. "The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter." EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

Oh, yeah, the LOTR trilogy. ;_; For me, it's "I can't carry it for you ... But I can carry you!" Although really it's everything from the beginning of that scene until the eagles show up.

Not really sappy, buttttt...the entirety of Where the Wild Things Are. All of it. That movie is so damn emotionally draining.

I'm a complete sucker for most scenes people deride as sappy. The only time sappiness gets on my nerves is if it's long and repetitive -- if it's short and intense, it can be the most saccharine cliched goop in the world and I'll still eat it up like ice cream.

One in particular: the end of Return of the Jedi. I guess a lot of people called it sappy, but IDGAF, it was the best ending ever as far as I'm concerned.
