Re: Panic Attacks

Well.....The first time I ever experienced a panic attack I was thirteen years old. They kept happening all the way up until I was twenty two or so, and then for the most part stopped. I've only had about two or so in the last three years. This is how I experience them:

It becomes hard to breathe and I feel like someone is trying to take over my body. It literally feels like I am losing myself/my personality/etc. My heart also races.

To be honest I only think I had panic attacks, since the description of a panic attack hit all of my symptoms. So technically I'm self diagnosed, lol. They only ever happened at night for some reason.

Do you breathe through your mouth when you're experiencing one? Taking long, slow breaths through your nose is the best way to handle attacks, as breathing through your mouth makes it worse. (Something to do with oxygen/carbon intake, it's been awhile!)

That's pretty much what I feel too. My heart feels like it's going to explode, I don't feel a connection to how my body is moving even though I'm aware I'm the one moving my limbs, and I feel like I'm losing my ability to form thoughts outside of observing things. "This wall is black, you need to calm down, etc. But I can't actually think.

I tried breathing evenly through my nose but that seemed to just ramp up my terror because I became convinced I was going to pass out. Every time I feel them coming tonight I take a deep breath through my mouth, hold it for fifteen seconds and then exhale slowly and just focus on that until I feel myself numbing out again.

Thank you so much for commenting.

Shit that was me. Reply here please?

You're welcome, and that's pretty much what I go through, too-So I can understand how scary it is! Have you ever tried distracting yourself? Watching something or talking to someone? I've found it's sometimes easier to handle if I distract myself, because I know once the attack passes I'll still be me. (Even if at the time it feels like if I don't hold on I will be lost!)

It sure sounds like a panic attack to me, but at the same time, I've not known them to include that level of paranoia. But I'm also definitely not an expert, so I wouldn't know :( Either way, these sound pretty serious - is there any way you can see somebody about them? Some sliding-scale clinics include mental health professionals, at least around the US (I don't know/remember where you're at, sorry). In the meantime, is there a way you can cocoon yourself in like a blanket or something? I know there are papoose-like restraints made for children for when they have attacks like that, so they can struggle without hurting themselves or anybody else. That's really the only thing I can think of :(a

I'm not sure, either. I've had panic attacks before, but not nearly as severe as the one you described. Mine feel more like a heart attack-- hot flashes, ridiculous amounts of sweat, shaky hands, pounding heart, etc. I've never experienced paranoia or hallucinations during a panic attack, although it sounds like that's entirely possible in the more severe cases. Either way, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to talk to your doctor if that's possible.

I'm going to leave this here in case it might be helpful in any way:

I've deleted my original comment because it was making me anxious and sick having it up but thank you for your help! :D

Hey

There's nothing to be ashamed of. Panic attacks are more common than you think, and it's not your fault! Good luck!

Just FWIW I deal with a fairly serious anxiety disorder, and certainly understand having a post up about personal things causing more anxiety... but I just wanted to offer, if you want to PM me I am more than willing to chat. <3
