Prison?

Or is mutilating people your go to here.

If it was an option perhaps I could see the argument for it, but literally making people brain damaged is pretty indefensible when you have that whole 'locked up until such a point they no longer pose a risk to the public' thing.

Prison costs money, you need guards and lots of them as well as lots of infrastructure. Its cheaper to lobotomize rapists and molesters then turn them back out as not being a threat any more. Not to mention seeing zommbied rapists drooling and shitting themselves might discourage others from taking up the habit. Death isn't scary, prison is considered cool to a certain type of person, a living death for the rapey where the wander around shitting themselves for forty odd years is probably scary enough as a punishment. No cool and kudos points for the bad gangster wannabe in that.

Ah, you don't have a damn clue what you're talking about, okay your point makes more sense now.

I really don't know where to get you started.

I suppose first would be some papers on what a lobotomy actually entails, and then some nice easy essays on why the death penalty is a terrible idea from every perspective.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Lobotomy entails cutting off the bit of the brain, by means of a hot wire inserted via the eye socket, which allows the perp to plan and cogitate coherently. They cease to be a threat and become easy to manage.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
But who will pay for the upkeep of the lobotomized person? If they can't care for themselves and have no family, the cost goes right back to society at large.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
If they have no family, then a state home. Which will still be cheaper than a prison.

mte. It's still costly.

Ok, but answer me this: I'm pretty sure that even lobotomized prisoners need a home and a person to take care of them. Families and state homes might fill this role at first but what would happen if no one would want to care for a lobotomized prisoner?

A state home or halfway house, either would be cheaper than prison, but compelling their family to take care would be the preferable choice where ever it is an option.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
So basically society would punish innocent people by dropping an indigent person on their laps after breaking their brain? Seems like a completely fair system, yep.

Wow, what a shit-headed and horrible idea that is.

I knew a woman who made a lot of money running a half-way house for psychiatric patients who couldn't return home because their families didn't want them.

as others already pointed out, lobotomized people will still need to be taken care of, so the cost thing makes no sense. you're also forgetting the part where lobotomies are irreversible and the criminal justice system is not perfect. innocent people are sentenced for crimes they didn't commit, especially if they can't afford a good lawyer or are a racial minority.

i get the hatred, but your whole comment is actually pretty sick.

This.

This is why I'm wholly against the death penalty (or at least one reason, and possibly the biggest). It's irreversible, and when the person turns out to be innocent? the justice system is anything BUT just.

I wouldn't wish a lobotomy on anyone - even a rapist or abuser or murderer. How does that make me any better than them? The thought is just vile.

i agree. i understand where the anger comes from, but it's not the legal system's job to torture offenders to the satisfaction of their victims. it just isn't.

aside from that, about a year ago i met a guy who murdered 2 people. he now dedicates his life to helping kids in lower-income areas and mediates gang conflicts before they escalate. the idea that committing a crime necessarily makes you an irredeemable drain on society does not sit right with me, even if the crime is horrible.

"when you have that whole 'locked up until such a point they no longer pose a risk to the public' thing."

Well, he was still a danger to the Nurse, obviously.

Nurses are people too, said no Doctor ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
And how do you feel about chemical castration?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't prevent rape-by-object, or any other form of sexual assault that don't require the arousal of the person performing the assault. It would be effective for a subset of offenders, but since it doesn't erase the underlying behavior patterns or pathologies, it wouldn't be nearly as effective as a lot of its proponents like to claim.

So not only a hideous violation of human rights, but also an ineffective one.
