I agree with a lot of this. I felt like BioWare *really* pushed Liara on players, especially in Mass Effect 3. She's not a terrible character on her own, but the way they did it kinda made me resent her regardless, and I can never ever romance her as a result because her creepy obsession squicks me out. No matter how much I go renegade with her, it always seems like she has this unrequited love for my Shepard. :(

Yeah. I couldn't stand her whole "Has Shepard sempai noticed me yet?" routine in ME1, but I quite liked her in Lair of the Shadow Broker. Some of her ME3 scenes are really touching.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt- yeah, as much as I say I resented her, LotSB is still my favourite DLC and I did like her there. Like OP though, the 'I couldn't let you go' part didn't sit all that well with me. In ME3, she did, but at times (like on the Citadel) I couldn't help but feel like she was hoping for something more from my Shepard. The time capsule was a nice idea, but again it felt like BioWare was forcing a BFF-type friendship with her on me.

So my first play through was femShep. Liara's all being Liara and that's okay. FemShep had googly-eyes for Garrus and Kaidan.

Then I was like you know, Kaidan needs more lovings from my Sheps, so I played through with maleShep all googly-eyed for Kaidan. Liara's all being Liara and that's fine, and then the Earth mission and I'm talking to everyone and then she's all "hey do me a favor" and I'm like wha-HEYWHATAREYOUDOINGoh okay it's a universe cool WAIT WHY ARE YOU HUGGING MY ARM--

I swear to God I do not remember her hugging femShep's arm in that sequence. Guuuh.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
....Huh. I don't remember that either, but my femshep wasn't really nice to her. Maybe your dudeshep was nicer to her/accidentally led her on more than femshep did?

It's funny, I took every renegade option possible with Liara in ME1, but she still asked if Shepard had feelings for her. Didnt ever get that from Kaidan or Ashley.

She does hug femShep's arm in the non-romance version. http://youtu.be/UcpiNI4s8FQ

Ehhh,, Asari culture is a very touchy-feely culture. Considering they do the meld practice with close friends and most of their greetings involving touching in some way.

She hugs FemShep through the experience. Not defending it being a little touchy feely because, by human standards, it is. But there's enough hints that Asari culture does view touch differently.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-03-02 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
One thing in her defense, asari mind melds are not simply sex. They can physically pleasure each other without mind melding. It is a method on which they reproduce.

It'd be like if aliens got really grossed out when they say parents kissing their kids on the cheek, if they'd only seen it done between couples. There's more nuance to what their whole mind-meld thing is.

It's never brought up because Liara is never having "sex" with Shepard. It is highly invasive, but Shepard knows that. It's just something that has to be done.

But that said, yeah. Liara's romance is really pushed on the player, and it's clear someone at BioWare really favored her and her romance. I can sort of see why, as she's there from the beginning, can be romanced by both Shepards, can't die, and will live along time (offering some nice cameo options for later ME games). But there's so much supplementary material concerning her and how we're all supposed to love her, it gets really obnoxious.

Saying it better than I did.

+1.

I love Liara, but I can see why the love-fest might grate on other people's nerves. BioWare does go out of their way to make her seem like an exceptional romance option and Shepard's bff, and it sounds like no matter how you treat her you're kind of stuck with her.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon above: Makes sense. I didn't touch on the mind melds/sex part since I didn't romance Liara, but I had the feeling there's you know, different types of mind melds.

Everything else: I agree with, only I couldn't word it as well ;)

+1 to all of this. I like Liara, but I get why other people don't as her romance is kinda pushy.

I think she's a great friend and companion to Shepard tho. The Shadow Broker DL made me even more fond of her and I liked in her ME3 as well.

I hate Liara as much as the next person, but I'm not sure your secret makes sense to me. I'd highly suspect Asari sex works differently than what she does with Shepard.

I could personally never romance Liara because she reminded me of my ex girlfriend. And well, there's a reason for the "ex" part.

I actually started to really like Liara in Mass Effect 3, but she was really boring to me in Mass Effect 1, and she never appealed to me as a romantic interest. Garrus all the way for that!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Garrus is a wonderful romance. And for my Shepards who don't date him, he's always their BFF in my mind, not Liara.

I love Liara, but I completely understand where you're coming from. That girl has some issues and I still think Shepard knocked up Asari all over the place with how many she melded with. (Not to say 99% of the romances has serious issues--I'd say Kaidan, Ash and Garrus have the least issues, but that sort of flips in ME3 at least in Kaidan's case).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god I hate her so much, if I could airlock her I would.

I hate how almost all the other squad mates have chances to die but Bioware wrapped Liara in cotton wool and told her "Awww baby we're not going to kill you! You are safe 5EVA and we'll give you your own DLC and make you very, very important! You'll go on all the missions and we'll hold you while you cry about them after!"

=/

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Unpopular opinion time but Bioware really shouldn't have favored romances. A)They were all maleshep romances they favored and B)it was different each game. Because, like, for the new players and whatevs.

But seriously, when the first game pushes Liara, the second game pushes Miranda and then the third game pushes Ashley (or suggests you should have stayed with her)....there's some weirdness.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt like the third game pushed Liara as well. And kind of Kaidan.

Or maybe I'm just annoyed I couldn't start a new romance with Garrus in 3.
