Why would rabbits be considered inherently sinister?

I mean, I have a pet rabbit and I love her to death. She is snuggly, bossy, and completely ridiculous. Kind of like every other pet you could have.

I figured out they were rabbit-based pretty quickly. And then I figured out it was kinda a hidden dirty joke (they were the first gendered Pokemon, meant to be paired up... and we all know what rabbits are known for doing when paired up ;) ).
