Ignore the machines.

Get a decent trainer to show you how to use free weights.

Having made sure you have the basics down and aren't going to hurt yourself, pick up http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength-3rd-Mark-Rippetoe/dp/0982522738 and start on the beginner programme.

Yes because using free weights is exactly what you should replace running outdoors with when you join a gym.

?

They were asking what fitness equipment to use now they have a gym available to them. I've never heard the rowing, treadmills etc referred to as machines so took them to have an interest in strength training as well as just cardio.

It also depends on their goals I suppose, but really each should supplement the other.

Now the common issue here, especially given I take it your a woman? Is fear of getting too bulky/masculine etc.

This is absolutely not going to be a problem. To get that kind of build is incredibly difficult, and needs direct targeting and effort to achieve.

What you will get, is much better overall fitness, and a more 'athletic build'. You mention wanting a flatter stomach - well this is great for developing your core and legs. Though there isn't such a thing as 'toning' per se, rather it's an outcome of level of body fat x developed muscles. And you can't directly target fat loss anywhere.

Really now.

You're giving me shit for pre-empting the most common worry I've seen?

I'll keep that in mind for the future.

More like it's kind of troublesome to assume someone has worries when they don't have any. I mean it's overall good advice but they never said they worried about how muscular they were!

I like to think the world's getting a little better. Don't assume women have special lady worries when they might be on the ball.
