Questions about the gym!

[personal profile] shinyhappypanic 2013-03-02 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey guys! I went to the gym for the first time ever today and I have a few questions (it's Planet Fitness if that matters). First of all, I've always been an outdoor runner, so today was my first time ever on a treadmill. That being said, I don't know how to operate any of the machines/what else I should be adding to my workout. I've never had fitness equipment available to me so I don't know what's good for beginners. Does anyone have any tips? I'm mostly looking to tone my legs and flatten my stomach.

My other question is a little more awkward for me. I've always preferred to exercise in the morning before school, but now I'll be driving 15 minutes to a gym instead of two minutes to the local track. I've been trying to figure out how to work out stretching my weekly tank of gas (I drive a gas guzzler and my school is 30 minutes away). So I was wondering--is it weird to shower and get ready for school at the gym? All I really do in the mornings is shower, put on my uniform and some eyeliner and go, so it's not like a huge routine...but would I get judged for doing this in the locker room? Do people actually use the showers at gyms? Sorry for the huge post!

Re the equipment: Ask someone who works there to show you how to use everything and point you in the right direction based on your needs and background. Planet Fitness is REALLY good about that stuff, at least here in Texas.

They are good in new york to. I think it's part of the franchise manifesto.

And I used to shower that way all the time. I'm a guy, but I don't think it should be that different. You would be mostly alone doing this anyway if your doing it early.

Hey! I'm a member of planet fitness as well. There should be instructors to aid you in figuring out the machines. There are also personal trainers available to help you figure out what routine you are looking for. Also planet fitness has "leg" days, etc. where you sign up and a pt shows you the routines best for whatever body part. It's free as well. But don't feel self conscious about taking time to figure it out for yourself. A lot less embarrassing to get off to a slow start than fall on your face or something.

I use the showers at the gym all the time and I spread out and do my whole hair and skin care routine and brush my teeth. That's what it's there for! If you're very self conscious you can fix your hair and do your eyeliner in one of the changing rooms. Mine have mirrors.

When I used to go the gym I got one of the trainers to help me out, also to draw up a exercise plan.

And about showering and putting make-up and stuff on, no one cares. I always did that, I even blow dried my hair without anyone caring, or to be more precise usually I wasn't the only one doing exactly the same.

I assume this is pretty universal?

Ignore the machines.

Get a decent trainer to show you how to use free weights.

Having made sure you have the basics down and aren't going to hurt yourself, pick up http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength-3rd-Mark-Rippetoe/dp/0982522738 and start on the beginner programme.

Yes because using free weights is exactly what you should replace running outdoors with when you join a gym.

?

They were asking what fitness equipment to use now they have a gym available to them. I've never heard the rowing, treadmills etc referred to as machines so took them to have an interest in strength training as well as just cardio.

It also depends on their goals I suppose, but really each should supplement the other.

Now the common issue here, especially given I take it your a woman? Is fear of getting too bulky/masculine etc.

This is absolutely not going to be a problem. To get that kind of build is incredibly difficult, and needs direct targeting and effort to achieve.

What you will get, is much better overall fitness, and a more 'athletic build'. You mention wanting a flatter stomach - well this is great for developing your core and legs. Though there isn't such a thing as 'toning' per se, rather it's an outcome of level of body fat x developed muscles. And you can't directly target fat loss anywhere.

Really now.

You're giving me shit for pre-empting the most common worry I've seen?

I'll keep that in mind for the future.

More like it's kind of troublesome to assume someone has worries when they don't have any. I mean it's overall good advice but they never said they worried about how muscular they were!

I like to think the world's getting a little better. Don't assume women have special lady worries when they might be on the ball.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with showering and putting on make-up, etc. after you are done. I used to do it when I have a membership to 24-Hour Fitness. Like, washing my hair and everything I'd normally do in the shower/bathroom before work. At lot of women go to the gym before work and dress there.

And, yeah. Someone who works there should be able to show you how to work everything and recommend things.

It's not weird to shower at the gym at all. Lots of people do it.

I prefer the machines to free weights because I think it's harder (not impossible, mind!) to hurt yourself on weight machines because they force you to some degree to use proper form. Most of the machines should have instructions with pictures pasted on them and you can always ask anyone who works there to show you and to recommend a work out.
