Little protagonists

Can anybody recommend books with little people as main characters? I'm a lot more interested in sci-fi/fantasy/historical novels than any other genres and human characters rather than a separate fantasy race but I'd welcome any recs you could give me :)

Miles Vorkosigan.

Basically the most badass SF hero of the past few decades. His author's name is Lois McMaster Bujold; I think her site has a complete chronology but the individual novels stand well enough on their own that you can jump in anywhere.

Reeeally? I keep seeing discussions about him around but I never looked into the books, thank you!

Seconding this. Miles is awesome. Hell, most of his family is awesome, even if some of them are scary.

The movie "Willow" would count, as a very young Warwick Davis plays the lead, and his entire village is made up of little people, but they are technically a different species, the Nelwins. It's a fun fantasy movie, lots of daring action and high fantasy. Plus Val Kilmer as the co-star, if that intrigues you.

I loved that as a kid and I've read the first book sequel as well, actually, but thank you!

There's a fantasy novel (perhaps series? I only ever read the first one) called "An Unexpected Apprentice" which is basically a mini LOTR with a female fellowship: the main character is a tiny badass lady-hobbit who ends up shieldsisters with a dwarf, a centaur, a bard and some others, there's an evil book they have to go destroy, an old wizard mentor...

I've never heard of that one but I will try to track down a copy, thank you!

Do you mind a detective/mystery novel rec? I have passionate feelings about Mongo the dwarf detective (that's how he's referred to in these novels)and his companions (like Veil Kendry) by George C. Chesbro. No one's ever heard of 'em, but I love 'em so much!
