I wish DW did more with having different doctors across different media. Get rid of the 13 regens rule and it's perfectly suited to being a transmedia fandom with all kinds of different characters. Have a bookverse or webverse or comicverse or radioverse woman Doctor doing her thing as well as the main franchise for the dodgy dude writers to keep writing.

You wouldn't even need to have elseworlds, because it's just else-times.

You say that as if there's really gonna be just 13 regenerations. Like the BBC is really gonna go "Yup, we'd really like to keep this show that makes us a fuckton of money running, but a plot point from thirty years ago means it has to end when the actor playing the Thirteenth Doctor quits. Such a shame."

They already got rid of this idea in the Sarah Jane adventures.

I was never sure of the way the 13 regenerations worked. Because it's obvious that a Time Lord can continue past that, since the Master is still going strong on something like his 16th body by now (admittedly, most of the ones post-Crispy and pre-Time War were stolen from other people). And the Master has tried to hit up the Doctor or the Time Lords for more regenerations before, so that seems to imply they're transferable. I always got the impression that the 13 were more a social limit imposed by the Time Lords on themselves rather than a biological or temporal limit imposed by the universe?

They have already pretty much hand waved away the 13 regenerations rule, there will probably be some random joke about it when we get to 14 but as long as there is a demand for Doctor who there will be more Doctors.

As far as doing other Doctors in different media that's difficult, because money needs to be made off those franchises and the best way to do it is by having the Doctor in the web/comic/book match the current Doctor on television. I imagine they only make so much money off of comics so a comic with a different Doctor would probably end up getting cancelled.

Maybe you're right. Idk, though. I feel like it's a franchise that could support multiple titles if you did the branding right. Comics might not be the best idea because of production costs. But tie-in novels already have an audience for stories of past versions of the doctor. I'd love to see them give it a go.

I think Doctor Who canon is played so fast and loose anyway that you don't really need non-show regenerations that kind of thing - you can just go nuts with the tie-in novels and audio dramas for existing incarnations of the Doctor.

They already have got rid of the 13 regens rule. It was mentioned in Sarah Jane Adventures.

RTD, who wrote that episode, has said it was a joke.

I bet that wouldn't stop Moff adopting it if he can't think of a way of doing it otherwise.

I live in hope that the actual answer will be 42 though. It would be such a great nod to Douglas Adams.

Oh, bugger, plot-bunny...

Thanks, I love it! I'm sure its original maker won't mind if you borrow/use it.

Good point. I can actually see female Doctors working as characters in a book-/radio-/etc-verse.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
you act like "female Doctor" has never been done in other media (audio drama) before. (sadly it is considered one of the worst Doctor Who audios around. Probably why it's the only one with a female Doctor, while there are several alternate male Doctors)

It was also done in The Curse of Fatal Death, but that's unfortunately wildly uncanonical.

Iris Wildthyme (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Iris_Wildthyme) is supposed to be the female Doctor. She isn't called that, obviously, but she does have most of his adventures in common. And she's hilarious and full of win so you should listen/read her anyway.
