Soul-bonding fic ideas

[personal profile] badass_tiger 2013-03-02 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Some opinions, fs? I got the trope on my trope-bingo square, and it's become my goal to either subvert or completely invert every trope I write. I can't come up with anything unique for soul-bonding fics though, especially since I'm not personally very fond of them. Anybody have any ideas? It doesn't even have to be a subversion/inversion, it could just be very different from normal soul-bonding fics.

Maybe, two people soul bond purely for political/business reasons, and then one (or both) have to deal with having a bond with someone they don't actually care for, and/or fall in love with someone else?
I've only read some soul-bonding fics, so I don't know if this is common outside my circle of interests or not.

I've seen a few fics that do that already though. And it doesn't really capture my interest, sorry

I'm not sure what soul-bonding is and how it differs from soulmates, but subversions tend to be along the lines of: soulmates with incompatible sexualities, soulmates who are already in love and FUCK DESTINY THEY MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES, and soulmates who acknowledge the inevitability of it but think it would be an awful idea due to circumstances.

You really have to say what kind of things you're used to writing, though, before I can give you any better suggestions. :)

It's not all that different, except it's something a little more tangible. Not sure what you mean by what I'm used to writing, though. Fanfiction? Fluff? Shippy stuff?

Well, fandoms mainly. :) Some ideas work better in specific settings.

How about making it so soulbonding actually merges the souls of those bonding together? Say, the two separate souls become one, in two bodies, or in a single body? There are some canons it could work in (like Supernatural, where souls are physical things that a person can live without).

I don't much like soul-bonding, either. I think I've read too many that just rambled and didn't go anywhere and inevitable included a scene where the soul-bonded pair telepathically discussed how hungry they were and decided to go and get burgers or whatever. I didn't need to read more than one version of that.

How about a non-bonded couple in a world where soul-bonding is the only acceptable way to go? Or swinging couples in a soul-bonded world! How about a sexual/asexual couple and how they deal with that? Cheating/adultery?

Or an existing couple who develop a soul bond in some way and it makes the two so intimately connected that it kills their relationship as a couple and they turn into co-dependent BFFs (or co-dependent nemeses).

All of this, of course, assumes you want to write about a romantic bond... How about a cross-species bond that totally messes with both their world views on love or logic or religion or intelligence?

make it so that the participants aren't that happy with it, like, make it play out like it would in real life

even with people I love, I would freak out and miss my privacy if that happened to me!

I remember starting (but then abandoning because I wasn't interested in where it was going, the quality was all right), a Ginny/Harry fanfic where the bonding isn't done on purpose and they're both rather freaking out about it and they don't instantly fall in love with each other or whatever

let me see if I can find it

ah, here it is

-After a certain age, you start feeling any pain or sickness your soulmate does until you find them (you share a soul, you're already bound to someone from birth, etc). Cue trying to find them before either of you gets killed because death for one means death for the other.

-Along those some lines, two enemies get bound to each other and decide that the easiest way to hurt/manipulate each other is to hurt themselves. Hijinks ensue.

-The bond seems to be a positive thing at first, with the usual increased intimacy, knowing what they're feeling/thinking/state of health, etc., but you can only spend so much time like that before you both start suffering various negative effects, like weakness, fatigue, sharing thoughts/emotions so much you're basically becoming the same person, etc. It starts killing you slowly because that sort of connection is too intense.

-Once you're bound to someone, you both end up marked in some way to show it, which would make it ridiculously easy for someone to kidnap one half in order to harm the other from a distance. The connection can be broken, but you wouldn't ever be able to form that connection with them again.

Here's a thought (I don't read many myself, so maybe this has been done):

The soul bond isn't a "couples" thing, but something that happens when you become part of a group (the military, a religion, or whatever), with all member of the group becoming... not necessarily a hive mind, but still sharing things (perhaps even involuntarily) that they don't with people outside of the group.

the ps2 game drakengard did something interesting with this: a human and a supernatural creature could bond to each other, but the human had to pay a price; one character lost his voice, another his hair, another his musical skills, another his "age", another her ability to bear children, and so on

you could make the souldbond as something that isn't all pluses, like fandom tends to treat them

make the characters regret it, is what I'm saying

Woah you have hit my muse in all the right ways and now I'm super interested in that game. Thanks!

you are very welcome!

as a warning if you eventually get your hands on it, it's a very interesting game, but from what I hear it is unforgivably hard in both plot and gameplay

it will break your heart and enjoy it

like, the harder you work to advance the plot and see the alternate endings, the more the game tortures you

but I think that's what makes it so special

I only know this game exists because of the Let's Play I read of it at lparchive.org, and to be honest I don't think I could take it if I had to play it myself D: it's... it's too much

Along with a few ideas on here:

Soul bonding is very rare, perhaps a once-every-fifty-years event (in a given population). You might ascribe any sort of reactions to this phenomenon you like, depending on the world/culture the concerned characters live in - perhaps it's viewed as something super-special and romantic, perhaps it's seen as almost religious in nature, perhaps it's feared or hated. Or maybe the older people in the community remember what happened the last time and start mourning for the two soul-bonded people, because of the nature of the bond: they'll eventually stop being separate people and become a conglomerate of a single person in two bodies.

You could spin this any way you like: horror, tragedy, fluff, angst, whatever you like. Maybe everyone in the younger generation's all happy for the couple, with stars in their eyes and all, and the couple believes them until they meet someone who saw it happen (perhaps the older person was friends with the previous pair?), and get the truth and a darker spin on the whole thing. Maybe they're horrified at catching themselves picking up the other person's preferences or mannerisms, or "echoing" what the other person is doing in sync. Maybe they're totally okay with it, or even excited about what'll happen. Maybe they "ascend to a higher plane of existence" or something, I dunno.

Actually, I quite like this idea. Regardless of whether or not you use it, I may do so at some point. Hope this helps, though?
