Howell Jenkins, Howl's Moving Castle. He's pretty much my favorite template for a deeply imperfect hero, extremely fickle, cowardly, hypocritical, vain, a little crazy and literally heartless for most of the story, but none of that stops him from helping people or being brilliant...he just accomplishes it in a very strange, roundabout way. And I like that the story ends without trying to fix his flaws (except for the heartlessness), just showing he can overcome them when necessary. There's nothing inherently wrong with Howl's flaws, he's just a person, who's exasperating sometimes and totally awesome other times. I love that.

Cordelia Chase, BtVS. Her unapologetic honesty and skepticism, even in regards to herself, was always refreshing to me (even when it got on my nerves, because sometimes a shred of tact is a necessary thing), and I loved the way she developed into a more empathetic person over time without compromising her frankness. Like, you don't have to be an arbitrarily nice person to be a genuinely good person.

Aeon Flux. She actually wasn't a good person, not remotely a hero, but that didn't mean she wasn't capable of caring about people or putting herself on the line for what she personally considered a worthy cause, just that it had to be about what she wanted to do. She was so narcissistic and self-motivated that I found her amazing. It's not often you have a female character who's allowed to be that self-interested without being a villain. She was more like a very rare example of a genuine female trickster, which I really appreciated, since I love tricksters and lament the lack of female versions.
