Characters you like *because* of their flaws

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a lot of characters people like in spite of them being very flawed. But how about characters whose flaws are actually a big part of why you like them? i.e., they make for a great story, they give context and depth to the character's actions, the flaws are a welcome presence in the situation the character is in (like, an obnoxious rude guy in a cast full of uber-polite characters), make the character stand out in a cool way, they make a character's development or heroic actions all the more awesome, etc.

Rodney McKay. Sometimes he bugged the hell out of me sure, but I think ultimately I wouldn't have liked him as much if he wasn't obnoxious and somewhat cowardly. I think it made the scenes where he showed surprising bravery or tact towards another character all the better

Helga. I know some people hate her for her terrible behavior, but I think it really adds depth to her character. She's nasty to everyone, even the person she loves, because she's afraid of being rejected. Her homelife is awful, and so she pushes people away as not to get hurt. Sort of the 'jerk with a heart of gold', but not as cliché.

Mickey Milkovich from Shameless US* is the first one that comes to mind, violent, rude and have no respect for authority. I love him though! Have since the first time he appeared to beat the life out of Ian.

He does have good sides though, he protects his sister, he does care for Ian (even if he would probably die rather than admit it) and he usually have a reason for why he hits people...

And I don't want him to change in any significant way, except possibly stop doing stuff that gets him sent to jail. But that is mostly because I don't like it when he goes away, nothing to do with him breaking the law.

*and his British equal

Oh and The Master, I loved The Master!

Guy Gardner, the Asshole Lantern. He's pretty much a huge jerk, his characterization in the 80s was borderline psychopathic, and I fucking love him for all of it. Eventually his characterization solidified into "big jerk but ultimately a good person who does care about the people he works with."

He stands out quite well against Hal Jordan the White Wonder, who's only interesting when he's evil or dead.

Doc Daneeka. His egoism and cowardice were great parts of his character. I know, a lot of people think that it makes him a douchebag, but I can't help but sympathize with him. He was a tragic figure in my eyes, and I don't think he'd actually done anything unforgivably bad.

I was slightly heartbroken when Heller didn't take him to Closing Time. I mean, Leon was a copy of Daneeka - why couldn't he just be him? I guess it had something to do with Doc being a "war character" - he didn't belong in the civil literary environment.

The Doctor. All incarnations of the Doctor. How utterly insipid I would have found the character and the show and how bland, smug, and empty its premise would have been if he was a selfless clean-faced well-balanced good guy who had a nice level head and a solid sense of right and wrong, rather than a wild, unpredictable, thoroughly screwed-up and alien meddling semi-anarchist with demons and problematic attitudes up the wazoo who always tries to help everyone in any way he can. It made the show feel real, like a folk tale, and stopped it from being a puffed-up kid's adventure show.

Not that I don't like goody-goody characters, because I actually totally adore them, even ones that people whine about being "too perfect" (whatever that means). But in this particular show, with this particular character? Leave the goody-goody-ness to the one-shots, supporting characters, and companions please.

Of course, experimentation and change and going against the grain is always good in this show. Hence why I loved how Five stayed nice and goodhearted despite how utterly depressing and nasty his era was. It's just that I wouldn't want to see that characterization more than once every fifteen years, y'know?

claire kincaid & the daddy issues, probably sleeping her way to the top.

i like professor x's controlling and patronizing nature. he's bland to me when people portray him all saint-like. i also think he revels in his education and wealth.

Catelyn Stark

[personal profile] grainne_mhaol 2013-03-02 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh heavens, Catelyn Stark. The tragedy of her situation with Jon is one of my favourite things about ASoIaF. I don't understand why so much of fandom needs to hate and blame - everything stems so perfectly from both her and Ned's weaknesses and limitations, it's moving.

I might be seen as an apologist in that I don't agree with most of fandom as to what Cat's flaws actually are. But I do think she has them, and they're a huge part of why I adore her.

Also Batman

All the characters who are flawed majorly.

It just makes them more interesting for me?

But then I have to avoid fandoms where they're a villian because people seem convinced I'll be ignoring the flaws that make them so interesting

SPN,Bela Talbot. The fact that she'u unapologetic and works only for herself on a very narcissistic level endear me in a very weird way.

First character who came to mind was Ashe from FFXII. I like that she's sort of a 'haughty princess' type but in a thoughtful, complex way that isn't an insulting cliche. She's patronizing and unpleasant to people she considers beneath her, but not in an over the top manner. She's not exactly a natural born leader, but she thinks she is and has a hard time accepting people's valid criticisms of her weaknesses. And she never really becomes a warm, approachable character, even though she's learned and grown as a leader throughout the game--there's still a cool, vaguely unpleasant aloofness to her that I'm glad she keeps.

I liked Vanille in FFXIII because she was so conflict adverse she ended up worsening her already awful situation. I like that she's forced to confront her lies multiple times; that she eventually overcomes her most serious flaw, but it's really hard and she slides back into old habits before finally having her big heroic sacrifice moment. I know a lot of people dislike FFXIII and Vanille in particular, and I understand why, but her storyline really affected me.

In the obscure fandom department, nearly all of the morally grey-to-outright-evil characters in Soul Calibur. Raphael, Ivy, Zalsasamel, Siegfried/Nightmare before his redemption storyline...I guess I really like characters who have questionable grips on sanity.

Also, pretty much everyone in the Borderlands universe is outrageously terrible in the most entertaining way possible.

I LOVE Captain Kirk, and not because he's perfect, especially old-school TOS Kirk. He was such an arrogant douchecanoe, and you could just look at him and tell how much he loved himself. It was wonderful.

Also, as I said yesterday, the disgruntled doctor-man from The Mindy Project, Dr. Danny. That's a character trait I love all the time though: jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold.

Howell Jenkins, Howl's Moving Castle. He's pretty much my favorite template for a deeply imperfect hero, extremely fickle, cowardly, hypocritical, vain, a little crazy and literally heartless for most of the story, but none of that stops him from helping people or being brilliant...he just accomplishes it in a very strange, roundabout way. And I like that the story ends without trying to fix his flaws (except for the heartlessness), just showing he can overcome them when necessary. There's nothing inherently wrong with Howl's flaws, he's just a person, who's exasperating sometimes and totally awesome other times. I love that.

Cordelia Chase, BtVS. Her unapologetic honesty and skepticism, even in regards to herself, was always refreshing to me (even when it got on my nerves, because sometimes a shred of tact is a necessary thing), and I loved the way she developed into a more empathetic person over time without compromising her frankness. Like, you don't have to be an arbitrarily nice person to be a genuinely good person.

Aeon Flux. She actually wasn't a good person, not remotely a hero, but that didn't mean she wasn't capable of caring about people or putting herself on the line for what she personally considered a worthy cause, just that it had to be about what she wanted to do. She was so narcissistic and self-motivated that I found her amazing. It's not often you have a female character who's allowed to be that self-interested without being a villain. She was more like a very rare example of a genuine female trickster, which I really appreciated, since I love tricksters and lament the lack of female versions.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY FAIL-DADS CLUB.

Laguna from Final Fantasy VIII, Kotetsu from Tiger & Bunny, and Phoenix Wright as of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. They're all sort of terrible parents, AND incredibly dorky losers, and although I frequently am wavering on the edge of embarrassment squick when they're getting screen time, I just love it. It's like, they try so hard and just fail even harder that it's far more endearing than if it actually worked out for them.

Agron from Spartacus. He just failed boyfriend 101 but you forgive him because a) you know his backstory and b) you never doubt, even when he's being a doofus, how much he loves Nasir.

Olivia Benson. I actually tend to like fanfic!Olivia better than canon!Olivia because in canon they tend to gloss over her flaws, whereas the better fic writers explore them. She's basically spent her entire career trying to atone for her own existence, which just makes me want to give her a hug even when she's being infuriatingly tunnel-visioned and taking her cases too personally.

Shinn from Gundam Seed Destiny. He's an obnoxious little fuck who needs to be slapped once an episode, but what the hell else do you expect him to be? It was nice to see a war-scarred kid given immense power and become an easily-manipulated monster instead of a messiah. His relationship with Gilbert was an awesome deconstruction of the Harry/Dumbledore mentor relationship.

Also Jason Todd in Under the Red Hood. Holy shit that guy is a massive seething ball of issues and trauma, but he's still a very complex and fascinating character to watch. The greatest thing is that all his issues have a legitimate source that reach all the way back into his childhood, so his anger is very justifiable. You can still argue if it's wrong or not, but it's justifiable. And my absolute favorite part was he had a point. Sure, he might be unhinged enough to want to give the Joker a thousand screaming deaths, but the world would be better off without him ...
