I don't like her behaviour in the last episodes and I didn't like when that blonde German guy had a Roman woman in a cell and everybody was raping her.

The rebels overall this season are just shitty people except for maybe Spartacus himself.

Nasir too, imo.

This happens with a lot with SJWs, unfortunately. You can never hate a minority character just because, you must be doing it because they're not a white male and need to check your privilege.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What's even more amusing, is if your not a white male, and you dislike a character, somehow that still makes you a white male.

Logic don't real.

You know, I can sympathize to an extent because what she went through WAS terrible, and everyone reacts differently to trauma (not that that excuses bad behavior). She has reason to be wary of Romans (they ALL do) and has reason to hate the idea of them, but yea, I agree that her behavior has been unsettling and sometimes I feel she goes too far. (However I also believe most the characters have at some point. Actually, probably all have. This season has been filled with "Did they actually do that?" from both sides. I think that's the point, to show that they're all human.)

So like...when someone says, "Naevia is unhinged", I can understand why they say that, and I can also sympathize with how she got there. I don't like her actions, but...not liking a characters actions on this show is nothing new to me by now.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
But more unhinged than what? Spartacus for inciting an entire rebellion and slaughtering an entire household of people because his wife died? The rebels for burning men, women and children to death when they destroyed the arena?

It's really hard for me to see the difference between the past actions and Naevia's actions.

I don't agree with all of Spartacus' actions (though I do think his reasons for the rebellion go beyond the death of his wife now, even if the show doesn't always do a great job of explaining that) and frankly the rebels have done wrong too. I wasn't jumping up and down in joy when they burned down the arena either, despite the fact that many of the people in the arena weren't completely innocent. (Same for the people in the Batiatus household, tbh.)

I think people DO dislike what the other rebels have done (especially this season). Now I don't know why she would get called out more than any of the others in this particular case, unless it's because she's always been one of the kinder characters in the show and the contrast of her actions is starker.

Spartacus and others have got their hands dirty as well, but at this point he's 'calmed' down a bit and has shown some mercy; Naevia and the other rebels actions stand out because of that.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yet when the same rebels were actively murdering everyone in the city, setting the entire arena on fire, THAT WASN'T PSYCHOPATHIC.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
They were all psychopathic and she was also psychopathic. Only not, because I don't think that's what psychopathic means. They were all out of control and indulging in lethal cruelty for the lulz.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just kind of like, what exactly separates Naevia's current actions from theirs? Other than it's making their poor baby Gannicus sad?

Yes, the rebels who participated in the city massacre, Naevia included, were acting like psychopaths.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So what exactly separates Naevia from all the other rebels on the show other than being a black female?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not called a racist/misogynist for not liking them?

Sometimes I feel so alone in my Naevia love in fandom. I still love her (and Crixus) to death.

In the last episode she did try to make it up to Gannicus, which while she should have never killed his friend, at least she's broken through her craziness (for now at least).

Naevia has been through so much shit over the seasons that I'm okay that she cracked for a while. I still think she's a tough ass warrior and love her and Crixus's relationship. Plus everyone has been pretty shitty to each other this season, lbr.

You are not alone with the Naevia appreciation

Really? No one's freaking out about the word "psychopath" in this secret and how it's ableist? I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised.

It's turning into the same thing in Teen Wolf. You can't possibly dislike Scott - or think he's a little dense, despite canon evidence - without being racist. Yeah he's erased a lot in fandom (a LOT), but Scott is not perfect, and someone who dislikes him can have reasons besides his race.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-04 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeah, I think when folks start saying that psychopaths and sociopaths are "disabled people," I'm going to kill myself.

Well... it is, but since it's not an actual diagnosis and the language is going to have some pithy descriptor for violent terrifying irrational unstable behavior, I'm not going to make a fuss about it.

The big issue most people who like Naevia have with people openly calling her a "crazy bitch" or a psychopath is that these are people who generally excuse the same behaviour when white dudes do it.

In Vengeance, when Agron repeatedly smashed a Roman's head against a rock, people were giffing it and saying "Wow, he's so hot!" and his needlesly/joyously violent actions were excused because he was young and his brother was killed. There was hardly any uproar when Nemetes revealed he'd secreted away a Roman woman to be repeatedly raped and mutilated.

Saxa takes joy in the murder of Romans and people think she's a badass.

Naevia, the victim of repeated rape and torture, acts violently in part because she thinks she's doing the right thing and in part out of fear/hatred and everyone's calling for her death.

It's disproportionate, and that's what has people saying that there's probably a basis in racism/misogyny

Because there's a difference in between killing your enemy in the field of battle, and killing your ally because you jumped to conclusions without any evidence, like Naevia did with Atticus.

There was hardly any uproar when Nemetes revealed he'd secreted away a Roman woman to be repeatedly raped and mutilated.

Probably because nobody cared about Nemetes in the first place, though I'm pretty sure the general consensus in the fandom after that ep was that he was scum. Did he have any fans? If it was somebody like Crixus or Gannicus being a rapist I'm sure there'd be more outrage.
