Actually Unfashionable Fashions you still like?

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-03-05 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I realized today, looking at a picture of Deanna Troi, I really love huge '80s hair. I really do. I know it's seen as the epitome of tackiness now, but I think it looks very flattering. I guess blame Fran Fine and Rogue.

Glad it's not in style, though, because it'd be an incredibly pain in the ass to maintain, and current styles are way more manageable.

So, any unfashionable fashions you like? Not stuff like pretty '60s summer dresses and flapper dresses and '70s bellbottoms--those things are retro.

90's flannel.

Is that really unfashionable

I am not fashionable myself but I think flannel is still pretty mainstream. And I think 90s fashion in general seems like it's kind of in again? IDK.

90s babydoll dresses and bulky platform shoes and the like. I mean, I can recognize objectively that they're hideous, but it's what I grew up seeing on TV and as a kid I couldn't wait until I was old enough to dress like that, because I didn't realize that fashions change.

I still have my 4 inch platform sandals. I love them to death, but because they're so out of fashion, I only wear them around my house during the summer YOU CANNOT TAKE THEM FROM ME!!!

I really like the look of long sleeves underneath a short t-shirt. Apparently that makes me uncool, according to people I've recently mentioned that to.

Really? I've never exactly been a style a maven but I wear this all the time and the most anyone has ever said is that it isn't very feminine or flattering. And then they usually tell me that the short sleeve T I'm wearing is really cool.

Day-glo Kool-Aid colored hair. Like in the 90's. I love it when everyone looked like Saturday Morning Cartoons come to life.

90s fashion was loaded with bright colors, but it seems like everyone wears greys and blacks now.

You know what I like? Miami Vice-style clothing. Linen pants, pastel sportsjacket, t-shirt. Nobody in their right mind would wear that these days, but I totally would.

I agree with you about 80s hair. But I could be biased because my hair looks like that naturally.

I still wear leggings under skirts and shorts all the time, which I don't think anyone has done since like 2006....

Would those hypercolor shirts count? Y'know those tie dye shirts that change color? I still want one.

Bootcut jeans. Apparently they're the worst jeans a girl can wear (besides the momma jeans) but I absolutely hate the way straight-leg look on me and don't want to be restricted to skinny jeans.

They are actually coming back in style now, but acid washed jeans. I hated them as a kid, I just want them now.

Sleeves that bell out from the wrist.

I thought that was the hottest shit when I was eleven, and my opinion has yet to change. I just haven't seen shirts like that around since I was eleven. :(

I'm not sure if it's "actually" unfashionable, but I haven't seen it pop back up. Around 02, medieval-based / peasant shirts, dresses, and skirts were in style. I still have some, from Target, that fit, such as a lovely shirt with an empire waist, almost tunic length and flowy, slightly off the shoulder with an understated lace trim, and bell sleeves. Then full-length floofy skirts. Also the ladies' blouses with cravats, which apparently were an 80s thing? I got some thrifted but have never found any new.

I haven't quite seen it outside of Ren Faire or fandom type places, so I'd be hesitant to call it retro, because retro implies some amount of popularity. But it's very much my style, and it was awesome to be able to get clothes locally without having to mail order.

But, I will agree with some people about the 80s big hair. Not all; there are some that went way too far, but there's some that are just striking.

I actually don't mind jeggings. If you're going to wear skinny jeans and a long top anyway (and maybe boots as well), why not go with something that won't bulge? I don't understand why they're supposedly the fugliest kind of pants ever.

I miss the calf-length skirts from the 90s and early 2000s. Lately the only skirts I can find are either (a) too short to cover my ugly knees or (b) punitively hideous.
