I don't like Seth McFarlane either but feminists will bitch about Mattie Ross for being too masculine, so...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
You're joking right? Please tell me that was a joke.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
na

no, there was a secret about it a couple of weeks ago criticizing a feminist blogger for saying she was too masculine

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
One blogger =/= "feminists"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:21 am (UTC)(link)

That doesn't seem to saying what you think. This seems to be the blogger's point:

I think feminist characters should, like feminists in real life, push beyond the societal norms, challenge gender roles and the institutions that actively work to maintain them.

She seems to be basically disagreeing with the notion that a feminist character is any female character who is not simply a damsel in distress or a love interest.

on the other hand I don’t want them just to recasting tough male roles for a woman to play which we’ve been seeing a lot of lately.

In True Grit, Mattie is certainly subverts expected gender roles by being witty and smart and competent and independent yet she’s not challenging the set of patriarchal archetypal male values ever present in most mass media narratives – she’s actually adopting them.

This really doesn't seem to be as radical or as demeaning as strong female characters are just too masculine.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Just a heads up: This blogger is a fucking dooley.

If there's one point that might help inform you about her true opinions it's that she believes to be a feminist you must also be a pacifist. Masculine traits such as violence must be rejected etc, etc.

There's a whole list of stuff she's said on the YMMV page (TVTropes.org) for feminist frequency if you're interested..

She has a whole list of whacked out beliefs about men and women, so you might be giving her the benefit of the doubt a bit too soon.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-03-06 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hm...I'm not sure what to think, then. I mean, I think the argument on it's own has some really fair and valid points that I don't think should simply be dismissed because some of her ideas are poor.

But I guess I would have to see those things for myself, because, well, just based on this one issue with Mattie it seems easy for people to put words into her mouth. On that YMMV page, I would say they characterized her idea very differently than how I understood it.

Hey, you actually understand what Sarkeesian was saying. I like that. Unfortunately, no amount of clear explaining will make the idiots in the audience understand likewise.

You did good, though. Grats.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Anita Sarkeesian is a nutjob. She's not the spokesperson for feminism.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
She's the best spokeswoman I can think of.

Also fuck you. Strong outspoken women are nutjobs? Victorian England called, They want their value system back.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck you right back. Never said Anita was a nutjob because she was a "strong outspoken woman".

If you think some youtube vlogger who complains about legos is better at representing feminism than women who are risking their lives by speaking out then you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
She is risking her life and more!

Hateful misogynist like you have been threatening to kill and rape her in an attept to silencew her for years now, but she's not letting them stop her - A true feminist. What have you done recently?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Are you trolling right now?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
No.

And Really - What have you done recently to help women?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
What has she done? Where has she made a difference for women? She's complained on YouTube and misrepresented various films, tv shows and popular culture to advance her own agenda.

You really think she's done more for women than, say, Ayaan Hirsi Ali? Do you even know who Ayaan Hirsi Ali is?

Probably not because she's not some privileged white girl whining on YouTube about Christmas carols being sexist. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you know, the gender politics of "Baby it's cold outside" is a more important topic to discuss than genital mutilation and forced marriage?
al28894: (look at all these fucks I give)

[personal profile] al28894 2013-03-06 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I am seriously imagining you being bashed on your head right now.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Because?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Because you're a dumb fuck who's playing oppression olympics and actually means it?

(no subject)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, there's yuor true colours right there. Amyone who disagrees with you, you fantasise about them being assaulted.

Nice.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Omfg no you didn't. Backup off al~numbers~. Your comment doesn't even make sense because the implication is that your behavior is so atrocious it has evoked an unusual response. So "Amyone" who disagrees with al~numbers~ is just fine. It's only dipshits like you who get subjected to the cruel indignity of having someone think about them getting hit on the head.
al28894: (For funny incomprehensible arguments)

[personal profile] al28894 2013-03-06 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
My god, you just noticed?

I think I already revealed myself a few months ago.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
<3 you for mentioning Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Er, What? There is no evidence whatsoever that AYRT holds any of those views.

Also "what have you done recently?" is classic misogynists' derailing tactic. Which leaves me side-eyeing YOU like anything.
