what even is this comment.

"Ruins the whole show"? "Massively, completely changes her character forever"? I guess I forgot that pregnant women and children are demonspawn from the deepest pits of hell.

Or maybe you're just a gigantic asshole.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
character =/= actress

a character who would never have a child suddenly having a child out of fuckin nowhere would, yes, ruin the whole show, genius

We get your hate for Bones.

*clings to Brennan who is still amazing despite having a kid now*

Nah, actually I'm the one who's pissed about Bones having a baby...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Why is that?

I know what you mean. When Brennan first started talking about children, it was "I should pass on my obviously amazing genes" and less "I want to start a family." Is it too much to ask for a fairly attractive female character to remain unattached? Romance and children aren't everything.

Nah. But it's a sad fact that most TV writers are morons who can't handle a pregnancy storyline in a remotely competent way. I'm just going by statistics here.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
oversensitive much?

and no, that's not what they were saying

NAYRT

Actually, I'm pretty sure that they were saying that having a character make a major life decision on the basis of the unanticipated actions of an actor rather than the character's own motivations or characterization makes for shitty storytelling.

Um, I wasn't? It's just that whenever TV shows decide to write pregnancies, it's almost always not very good at all. It's not that it's inherently a bad idea, but it is realistically a huge drain on the character's available time, and a lot of TV writers can't write mothers of young babies realistically. They always portray them as leaving their baby behind for vast amounts of the plot or as having a perfectly normal routine where they get to engage in epic interpersonal drama/hang out with their friends/work late and hang around after work/have plenty of free time on their hands, with just a couple token "oh the baby kept me up all night" lines tossed in here and there.

Also, the actress' and character's motivations might be totally at odds with each other, which would make the decision itself contrived or kind of wtf.

If I ever see the words "babies" and "plenty of free time on their hands" in the same paragraph again, I might actually cry.

I didn't think Charmed did too badly when it came to Chris, though the whole first magical pregnancy with Wyatt and 'amazing baby' was annoying. Chris started off a hot 22 year old with a cool storyline and as a baby had hardly any screen time so he kind of 'fit in' rather then had stories revolving around his baby self.

Having a baby is kind of a big deal to most people. Having responsibility of a whole other human being can change a person.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it just ruins them.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
If having a baby doesn't drastically change your life, you're doing something terribly wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-07 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Exactly--but taking on greater responsibility should change your character for the better.

Yeah, it sort of does...unless they find clever ways to get the baby out of the way like Xena, or Angel.

Obviously it depends on the show, but a baby on a show that is more action or plot-oriented is a bit of a disaster. I mean, unless you want you character to come across as a shitty parent, you need to write some interaction with the kid, and that will generally already really impact storylines. Plus the baby bits are just really boring to people not interested in babies.

Often Hollywood has a hard enough time writing women, let alone mothers. Sadly oftentimes "mother" becomes the most significant characteristic of a female character after she's given birth.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You thought what they did with Connor on Angel was clever? ...Seriously? That was one of the most gut wrenching and unnecessary plotlines I've ever seen.
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2013-03-06 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Clever is the wrong word. I generally dislike Connor as a character. But I much preferred him coming back as young adult than having kept a baby on that show.

So it was the lesser of two evils.

Do you watch Southland? The female detective on that show just had a baby (she's a single mother, the father isn't in the picture) and until now I think that they've handled it pretty well. She's still a detective first, though obviously the baby has made a huge impact on her life.
