Robot/android protagonist recs? Anyone?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I've gone through Asimov, PK Dick and the big scifi franchises - Star Wrars, Trek, and Aliens etc. and now I'm dying for more books/comics/manga/fic with intelligent robots of any kind. I googled all over for a rec site, but there doesn't seem to be a keyword-based Netflix-type site for books. Help?

Here. This story was very controversial for its time and when the Comics Code Authority tried to censor it, EC quit doing comics in disgust.

Also, not a book, but you could always watch Blade Runner if you haven't seen it yet. (No I'm not just saying that because it's my favourite movie, shut up.)

Blade Runner is my favorite movie -- I think it's what got me into scifi in the first place. Well, that and Ghost in the Shell.
That comic looks really neat, I'll definitely look into it.

This was a really cool link! Thank you. :D

Oh wait. I want to be weird at you for a minute. I thought of you today! A guy in my class had been talking about trying to decide between two video games and I told him you had been really into Dishonored, how cool you had made it sound, and repeated some of the stuff I vaguely remembered you saying. Well he went with your advice and is really happy!

The Matrix and the Animatrix movies have that.

The anime Ergo Proxy has a lead robot character and one of the plots centers around them. I think Casshern and it's various incarnations deal with robots and cyborgs.

I Robot focuses on a sentient robot.

"Fondly Fahrenheit" by Alfred Best springs immediately to mind. Such a great story. You might also enjoy some of the AI stuff in things like the Culture books by Iain M Banks.

Also, you should read Pluto, by Naoki Urasawa, if you haven't already. Like, now. Like, seriously, you should stop everything you're doing and read it immediately.

You might also look through the sf-encyclopedia and see if anything takes your fancy: http://www.sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/robots

He's not THE main character, but a robot is one of the main characters of the webcomic Gunnerkrigg Court, and robots feature heavily in it. There's all sorts of interesting stuff in there regarding their history, formation, society, even religion.

...Granted, some robots are questionable on the 'intelligent' side, but Robot (one of the main ensemble) definitely is. The robot-centric chapters include chapters 1, 12, 18, 25, 29 (partially), 33, and the first part of 41, but I seriously do recommend reading the whole thing, since the robots are present from like... page six, seriously.

I second this recommendation.

It's an urban fantasy setting, but it touches on stuff like dualism, spiritualism, magic vs science, technology, humanism, divinity, morality, etc.

It's surprisingly rife with symbolism, and while the plot isn't super complicated, it's very well thought out; the author already knew how the story would end when he started, he plans scripts for each chapter and draws several pages in advance so the comic never misses an update.

There's only been a few pacing hiccups, and the art started a little weak, but it's gotten downright beautiful these days.

It also has some of the strongest characterization I've ever seen in any medium. It takes a while to gain steam in that sense, but the author doesn't take the easy way out with his characters; there's is all sorts of gray morality, people with flaws and believable relationships going on there.

I recommend you try to reach up to Chapter 8 at least (the first few chapters are very short, it shouldn't take you more than 40 minutes or so) to see if you like it.

The main character is human, but it's literally about his relationship with his partner android and what draws the line between a machine and a human as a sentient being.
