THIRD BASE!

CAN I HIJACK THIS AND MAKE IT A BASEBALL THREAD? ANYONE WATCHING THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC? THAT CANADA/MEXICO BRAWL WAS HILARIOUS.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes let's talk about baseball! That brawl WAS hilarious. I think the funniest part was that the thing that set it off (Canada bunting in a run) was completely justified because of the run differential rules, but Mexico still got all worked up about it. It's funny. Also, I'm not sure who to root for in the next rounds. There's too many underdogs. Netherlands are always awesome (Honkball! Bert Blyleven! Honkball!) but I'm also pretty excited about Italy because, come on, it's Italy. And then there's still Japan to root for. Ugh too many decisions.

Also, there's a better-than-even chance I'm going to go to some of the semi-finals or the final. So that should be exciting depending on who gets in.

Baseball. Yay baseball.

You'd think with how popular soccer (football) is in Mexico, they'd understand tournament rules with run/goal differentials. Canada needed to make up a bunch of runs because Italy trounced them, so yeah bunting in a run makes sense.

That's so cool you might get to go! I haven't been to a game since I was like 6, and I didn't care at all back then. I wanna see my Angels this year, but I doubt I'll get the chance. :\ I want a stupid foam Trout hat, dammit!

I think it's because all the (dumb) ingrained Unwritten Rules of Baseball get so ingrained in you, so early, it becomes a total habit and just really hard to work around. I'm sure they all understood it but in the heat of the moment, I guess instinct and emotion kind of make sense.

Yeah it should be fun, I hear the atmosphere at WBC games gets really, really intense. You should get out to some games too! There's nothing like the atmosphere of a baseball game, IMO. So much fun. Even if you are an Angels fan - and speaking of which, how freaking good is Mike Trout? That dude is AMAZING. He's going to be so fun to watch.

GAHHHH I can't wait for baseball to start.

Is baseball becoming more popular outside the US than it is in the US? It was once the "National Pastime." Now the world series barely makes a blip compared to Superbowl or the NBA playoffs. But outside the US, baseball fever is in full swing. Baseball fans in Japan alone make Americans look like jaded teenagers full of, "meh."

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. I only know one person who cares anything about baseball.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Baseball is actually extremely popular and healthy in the US, it's just that football is RIDICULOUSLY popular. Baseball doesn't do as well on the top end as football or basketball - IE, in terms of the number of people watching the playoffs - and it doesn't have as much prominence in the media, maybe. But baseball does pretty well for regular season TV (despite many games being on regional sports TV networks) and it does extremely well in terms of live attendance and ticket sales. And if you look at the kind of money that networks are paying for MLB games, it's hard to say that baseball isn't doing well.

It is true that Americans don't really care as much about the WBC. And Japanese fans tend to be better organized than American fans and do more chants and stuff, which is really cool. And it's great that baseball is becoming so popular worldwide. But I don't think baseball is unpopular in America - it's still really popular. It's not football, but it's not hockey either (no offense hockey fans).

The World Series is a SERIES: 4-7 games, with off days for travel. It will never be "event television" like the Super Bowl, where everything's settled in one big game. And tbh, I'm kind of glad of that.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I'm getting less and less interesting in American football these days and I think it's partly because it's such an over-the-top spectacle and so omnipresent. There's something oppressive about that. Especially combined with the violence of the game.

I like that baseball has a slightly more relaxed pace and isn't a massive commercial event the same way. I like that. It's okay if not everyone in the world watches the World Series.

And how psyched were the Boston Red Sox fans to see their relief pitcher, Alfredo Aceves, to be in the middle of the brawl? Word is his teammates cheered.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't Alfredo Aceves the one who didn't want to throw in a spring training game but his manager made him and so he just went out there and lobbed it?

Ohhhhh, Alfredo.

Yeah, he's kinda batshit crazy. He's been much better behaved in Red Sox camp since then. I'm guessing he was just holding it all in.
