question about trigger warnings

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so. There are certain things that I really, really don't want to read about or see or hear about. Drug use is a big one. But it's not a trigger for me. I have never had any bad experiences with drugs or anything, they just completely freak me out. I guess it's kind of a phobia? And any depictions or stories involving drug use just bother me so much. (I had a panic attack yesterday while watching Flight. ;_;)

So, is it wrong of me to say I need drug use to be tagged with trigger warnings, when it's not a trigger for me? Should I just say I need it tagged, without saying it's a trigger? And just in general, what can you do about things that you really don't want to read about/see (possibly things that will be bad for your mental health on a less severe level) but that aren't quite on the level of triggers?

(I don't think I'm wording this very well, sorry.)

Yes, just say you would like it to be tagged. There is a difference between triggers and tags, though in the end they give the same heads up. Though I'd avoid saying "I need this to be tagged" and phrase it more as a request instead of a demand.

For things that I don't want to read about (and casual and recreational drug use is one of those things) I'm just careful about checking tags and descriptions. If I stumble on a fic that goes in that direction I backbutton out. It's the only thing you can do, really.

You could simply ask for a "warning"

I remember the old days of fanfic when we just had warnings (usually listed above the disclaimer), and I kinda wish we had a system where warnings and trigger warnings were separate things.

I had pretty much the same reaction to Flight and never would have seen it if even one of the previews I'd seen had hinted that it would be one drug abuse scene after another.

Drugs are a very common trigger and even if they aren't exactly a trigger for you, it's such a common thing to warn for that asking someone to add a warning or tag is perfectly acceptable and usually won't cause even the slightest problem.

I've requested people tag things I don't want to see before, like on Tumblr so I could use tumblrsavior, but my experience has been that requests like that are largely ignored unless the people involved are close. But my experience is limited to just a few fandoms on Tumblr and that might not be the case for everyone. There usually isn't any harm in asking.
