It's kind of amazing that the entire Dangan Ronpa fandom is apparently too poverty-stricken to spend the $10 dollars to get an account.

Like, seriously, that must be the poorest segment of fandom there is, demographically speaking. It's really something.

I could afford the 10$ personally, but 1) I don't have a credit card and for my own reasons know I can't be trusted with one and 2) don't trust paypal or any other payment services enough to relay any of my banking info. I could get if other people were in similar situations, or simply have no means to pay otherwise even if they do have the money.

That being said, I don't whinge every time the paywall goes up and stopped tracking the Dangan Ronpa tag due to sheer irritation over the people who do. Holy shit but they can be whiny.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Or they just don't want to give money to Something Awful.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Has SA done something that I'm not aware of that would make them unworthy of giving them money in the last couple years? And, if they have, isn't it equally problematic to sponge off them?

That's their prerogative, but it's also SomethingAwful's prerogative to say, "Then you don't get our original content."

Eh, I can see where they're coming from. I don't think they're "poverty-stricken" per se. I had the money, but I have no paypal, credit card, or debit card, so when I got my account, I had to ask someone to buy it for me and then give them the cash. Idk if anyone else who's complaining has done that, but the process itself was kind of ehhhhh.

Unless of course you've actually seen someone saying "I DON'T HAVE TEN DOLLARS" in which case fffff.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a case of being too poor, it's a case of "I'm not going to spend that money, much as it is difficult to live without Kuzuryuu, when I know the paywall will eventually come down." If it was indefinite, I would have paid.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pay the tenbux if you're enjoying the content and you can afford it. Christ.

I'm... confused. Are you talking about the Let's Play in the forum? Because I thought that was all there for free.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
da

the entire forum (but before it used to be by sections, I think?) goes through periods where you have to register to see the actual threads, and periods where anyone can read them

Cosigned. I love my friends and it's cool to be able to talk DR with them but hearing about omggggg this paywall is so unfair why should I have to pay money!!! all the time was really irritating.

BLESS THE PAYWALL

If you can't afford $10, then why're you on the internet.
If you don't have a credit or debit card and can't ask your parents, then you're too young to be a part of the somethingawful forums.
If you don't trust paypal or any other payment service for a one-time, then you're too paranoid to be on the internet.

I wish there was no Dangan Ronpa fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Okay. I'll get off the internet until I have ten dollars to throw away. Poor people aren't allowed to do anything but pull on bootstraps until they're not poor!

This is coming from someone who thinks the owner of content absolutely has a right to decide to charge people for access.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I really sympathize with anyone who can't afford the registration fee, but there is no way that's the case with everyone who bitches about the paywall. I really suspect that it's not the case with the majority. I really think the majority of people in fandom could afford the reg fee if they wanted to. So all the bitching about how some people can't afford $10 dollars (although it rightly points out that verusmayai is wrong) is also kind of off-topic, because there's no way that's univerally true for the mass of people who bitch about the paywall.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
wow, judgey much

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you can't afford $10, then why're you on the internet.

Someone who doesn't have $10 shouldn't be allowed to use a library computer! In fact, libraries should charge people to use the computers!

If you don't have a credit or debit card and can't ask your parents, then you're too young to be a part of the somethingawful forums.

Not everyone has or wants a credit or debit card, and that is not indicative of the person's age. There are people, for example, who have had serious spending problems in the past and who, as part of cleaning up their act, have gotten rid of their plastic.

If you don't trust paypal or any other payment service for a one-time, then you're too paranoid to be on the internet.

Lol what? There is absolutely a risk in disclosing bank account and identifying information on the 'net, even to a usually secure payment service, and it's not wrong for someone to decide that they'd rather not take that risk.

It's amazing how smug and superior you people are over paying $10 to read crap on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
But then if you don't have a credit card or a debit card through your own choice and not because you actually can't get one, you don't get to complain about things that only accept debit or credit. You made your decision and you have to deal with it.

The same goes for refusing to use Paypal or anything like that. Fine, don't use them if you don't want to. But don't complain about how you can't do things as a result.

"If you can't afford $10, then why're you on the internet."

library? roommates who pay for internet? unemployed but living with employed people who don't mind sharing internet? living in area with free wi-fi? many possible reasons.

"If you don't have a credit or debit card and can't ask your parents, then you're too young to be a part of the somethingawful forums."

or simply doesn't use credit card or debit card or is in funny (for lack of better word) situation where internet service, electricity, etc. are affordable but extra expenses would tip the balance badly

"If you don't trust paypal or any other payment service for a one-time, then you're too paranoid to be on the internet."

something awful doesn't accept paypal; it asks for credit card number (also, not all countries have "one-time" payment services)

Someone asked upthread why some people might not want to give their money to SA.

I think you may have answered their question.

win-win situation then. they keep their money and we keep our forums clean.

which is a shame because there are cool people there and interesting conversations :(

huh. I don't know what this is, but going by the thread and the tumblr tag, it's some kind of visual novel game with cool character designs. About kitchen magic time adventures. And SA has an LP about it?

Thanks for the rec!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Kitchen magic time adventures" is a pretty...far off description, honestly. A better one is something like "Hunger Games meets Phoenix Wright". Bunch of kids are trapped in a school, and a third party says the only way someone will be let out is if they get away with murder. Successfully kill someone and get the blame stuck on someone else, you get out and everyone else gets killed. Kill someone and get caught out, and you get killed yourself. And the game itself is split between solving the murders and figuring out just why you all are stuck in the school in the first place.

Had to give up tracking the series tag on tumblr, and almost ready to give up character tags as well, because honestly, I don't know which I hate more, the flood of whiny posts when the paywall's up, or the flood of livebloggers when the paywall's down. Nobody's as witty as they think they are, and it's irritating as fuck to have to scroll past forty morons just to see some nice pictures.
