Not really a Who fan but I just wanted to say: "Goofy" is not a pejorative. There's so many things that I like that are goofy, and it's because, as you say, things that are goofy are often also fun and audacious and interesting. And also they often feel relaxed to me.

"Goofy" is not a pejorative.

Right, Goofy is a dog.

THEY'RE PAINTING THE TARDIS PINK! OMG!! NOOOOOOOO! EVIL BEINGS!

Okay seriously now which serial is that from? I'm attempting to see as many as I can but I will add that one to my "see sooner rather than later" list if I must.

EDIT: WTF. Replied to the wrong post. I... do not know what happened there. o.O

Anyway, I haven't tried any ClassicWho, but this episode does look awesome. Might check it out!

I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

Then (for a serious case of Mood Whiplash) go watch Ghostlight. It's one of the best Classic Who serials ever, IMO. Oh, and Enlightenment. And City of Death... OK, I need to stop now. ;)

Nothin' wrong with the goofy 80's serials. One of my favourites is Paradise Towers, which is equally as cheese-tastic, and admitting liking it is probably considered an act of heresy. =D

As long as it's not Delta and the Bannermen, I don't think anyone'll lynch you.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only Delta and the Bannermen fan in Whodom? I even liked the Rani's panto impression of Bonnie Langford (who always seemed to be doing a panto version of herself) in Time and the Rani.

I don't remember because I was...three or something. But when this first aired my mum tells me I thought the Kandyman WAS Bertie Bassett and she had to awkwardly try and divert my attention from the horrible thing he was doing. Good job mum, because I have no memories of it at all!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It was seriously out of sync with its time was the problem. Move this up ten years and drop it into Buffy and it would have been the perfect fit (pretty much all of Seven's stuff from his last two series except Remembrance and Silver Nem would fit in with the Buffy style of storytelling) but for the 80s and 80s-Thatcher!Britain it was incredibly out of stride with normal tv conventions and people didn't know what to make of it. The critics just sort of sat around it, and poked it with sticks like a caveman confronted with an ipod. They latched onto the strident anti-Thatcher sentiment, and the Gay Rights theme (and the go-slow cart) and decided to beat it with a bone like they were reenacting the opening of 2001.

"If getting a huge kick out of watching an evil Bertie Bassett killing people with fondant is wrong, I don't want to be right."

I AGREE WITH THIS SENTIMENT.

I would also really like a NuWho Doctor to at some point make a reference to the events of this episode, and to take note of the Thatcher connection in-universe.

To this day I don't trust Bertie Bassett and his jolly smiling face. What are you up to Bertie? What do you want????

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with fond memories of The Happiness Patrol! Didn't care for Delta and the Bannermen though.

I'm one of those who hasn't seen this serial, but based on your secret and the content of many of the comments, I think that I ought to as quickly as possible.

I love The Happiness Patrol, but not because of the silly parts. I love the serious bits of it, those are the memorable parts of it for me. (I do like the silliness too though.)

I've never met anyone who hated the Happiness Patrol. Like other stories better than it, sure, but everyone seems to be fairly amused by the cracktasticness. As well they should be, tbh.

You should know that I immediately recognized this serial BY THE WIGS ALONE before I noticed the pink TARDIS in the background. I love me some Happiness Patrol. In fact, I love the cracky Classic Who serials above all other kinds: 3 of the first 4 Who dvds I got are crack stories- The Mind Robber, The Time Monster, and The Happiness Patrol.

I loved the Happiness Patrol. Hilarious cheesiness + anti-Thatcherism. In retrospect, it's not actually any good, but it's highly enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I love Happiness Patrol! Seven singing a little bit of 'As Time Goes By' is probably one of the reasons, but everything about it was just so much fun.

I love The Happiness Patrol so much I cosplayed it at Gallifrey One, so nope, you are not alone. It's one of those serials where I went in for the crack and wound up going "...I did not expect this to give me so many feelings about mental health!"

I have really fond memories of this episode though. I watched it as a kid when a channel was screening classic Who and I think it was one of the first episodes I watched.

If getting a huge kick out of watching an evil Bertie Bassett killing people with fondant is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Perfect statement! I couldn't have put it better myself.

Also: I really loved the arc! Then again, Seven is one of my favourite Doctors, so I'm not really unbiased. Don't want to be either. Fabulous Doctor, kick-ass companion and some very interesting stories. And evil Bertie Bassett was great!
