I think the attitude of treating House Elves like possessions is a bad one and partly responsible for the horrible treatment they get from people like the Malfoys. But if this race want to serve, and are happy and not abused in their place of work, and you still protest, you've found yourself in SPEW country, and need to get some directions outta there sharpish. I think they should be like Dobby - paid and with some holidays - and also be given more legal protection and higher status. I think perhaps, with a lot of work and understanding and communication, that could be achieved. But taking work away from them completely, and depriving them of masters? Considering their natures, that in itself seems a bit cruel and disturbing to me.

They say they don't want to be paid. Who are you to tell them otherwise?

That's a fair point, and why I mentioned 'communication'. Dobby shows us House Elves have the potential to want to be paid; considering the abusive environments Elves can find themselves in, and the limit of Harry's perspective, more still might want to be than we were shown. He might not be as much of a weirdo as he's said to be.

Now, if there was actual proper communication and so on, and an Elf still refused it? Nope, I could not and would not force pay on them. I just don't think the possibility should be dismissed outright, and I also don't think that Dobby and Hermione were brilliant at the communication thing.
