For those of you that don't know, this character ┌(┌^o^)┐ is a meme represents like a monster fujoshi of some sort that crawls around looking for BL. I can see why it is offense as it degrades fangirls into some sort of monster, but personally, as a fujoshi, I'm not offended at all??

I know some of people take offense to the term fujoshi, since it literally means "rotten girl" and it's degrading or whatever but I feel like a lot of people don't understand that Asians humble/degrade themselves constantly?? (saying this as an Asian person) I mean there are a lot of Japanese people that call themselves otaku and that IS a degrading term but they don't really care. It's like calling yourself an awful/weird/perverted person jokingly, which happens all the time in Western culture too. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't get why people are offended by others degrading themselves as a joke. *shrugs*

Yeah, if people have spent any time lurking Japanese fangirl places, they are the ones calling themselves rotten most of the time :V Same with using the "homooo"-character.

Wow seriously LOL. That is weird and brilliant.

...sorry for the dumb but what does BL stand for in this context?

(I've never seen this meme either. I'm not sure where exactly it's popping up)

Boys Love (oddly known more commonly in the west as yaoi)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
As somebody who came into BL through living in Japan, it is *really* weird to hear people use yaoi as a blanket term.

I guess it's all backwards...I hear people say "yaoi" (though usually to mean manga/anime explicit slash; it's a specific genre, isn't it?) all the time and I hear "slash" even more often but I've never heard "BL"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
boy love.

the meme's mostly popular in Japan and it's leaked around the anime fandoms in tumblr i guess

i think for people referring to themselves as fujoshi/whatever degrading term is fine but it's annoying to see this holier-than-thou condescending attitude from others outside the bl fandom/subculture/whatever you want to call it. also, sjw's aside, there's this huge chunk of fanboy culture which seems to love shitting on a lot of media that's non-heteronormative (or implied to be) and dismissing it as yaoi-bait/fujoshi pandering which feels a bit insulting and derogatory.

This question isn't meant to prove any points, meant to tell you not to feel/react/act in any way, defend anybody or call out anybody. It's an honest "what would you say" question. Also, it's not going to have the best grammar ever because I'm trying to word it just so.

What about those certain fanboys makes their words more hurtful to hear than when, say SNL does a sketch that implies (for example) that Harry Potter fans never shower and run around pretending sticks are wands and bug the bajeebus out of everyone in the world?

I'll even give my own guess and say that maybe someone would find it worse coming from those fanboys because they should know what geeky obsession is like and so what they say is more insulting by nature. Maybe? If I had to guess.

no, it's a good question and my honest answer would be: i don't know in that case? but it is a different context.

i'm not sure i'm being very articulate about this but i think a) people should be allowed to enjoy whatever they want fannishly without getting shit from anyone (in an ideal universe which this isn't, i know, i know) and b) while i totally get that bl/slash fandom/whatever isn't always about or anywhere close to representing rl same-sex relationships, that's hardly why it's shunned from what i've seen from fanboy culture (most notably, in animanga/gaming communities anyway...and no, i'm not talking about SJWs here at all). instead, it's mostly just outcries of ~OH NO WHY ARE YOU POLLUTING OUR SHONEN FANDOM WITH TEH GAY~ and it just comes off as elitist and homophobic and a tad hypocritical (since they feel they get a free pass to enjoy and promote media which is also full of a load of problematic tropes).

I don't know what it is about the "in an ideal universe" part, but it is really sad that we even have to apply that sentence to so many aspects of the net and IRL. What you said should just be a given- that you don't go attacking people for shipping A/B (at least not in public or to their faces; it's another thing to have a private forum for "I hate ship A/B" where if an A/B shipper goes there of their own accord, it's their own fault).

It just reminds me of how ... accessible the net is getting these days. Not saying that the days before Bookfase/Tumblr/Myspace/All those other things that made the internet usable for people who like that kinda thing were better. I'm saying that now it seems like we have to make a lot more allowances for rude mofos and eejits. Allowances like "in a perfect world, you could have a forum and enjoy yourself and your ship without being harassed". It reminds me of how in school, a few of us went to the teacher to complain about the students in class who were always talking and muttering during lectures. Teacher's answer was "well there will always be people like that, you have to learn to deal with it". You know what I mean? It's like no! Why should decent people who are following the rules have to cater to unacceptable, idiot behavior? Why do people who follow the rules have to make allowances for people who are breaking the rules willfully and knowingly? It'd be one thing if they couldn't help it or if they didn't know better, but if they don't have the excuse of not knowing any better... then what the hell?

So, I guess I'm saying I agree with you and understand, and the rest is just me being miserable about people who just... just why?. Just why would they behave like that? Maybe the argument could be made that "I can't find any material that suits me because they generate 90% of my fandom's activity and I'm annoyed and when I say they're polluting my fandom, I'm speaking out of pure emotion without thought", but even then,.. yeah, I guess that as usual, a lot of this could be solved if everyone would ask "what do you mean by that". But we "don't have time for that", I guess.

I can't be offended by anything that looks so happy.

I didn't know that, but I really do get that. Thanks for posting this, anon. No, seriously, since this is my first explanation of this character, I'm glad it was a positive one.

Also, you made a really good point- people who yell at and name call seem to be assuming that the person they're yelling at has had their same life experiences, same culture, and same raising. It's like... how is the person who comes up to you and says "what up my homie?" supposed to know that your cousin had severe agoraphobia and would never leave the house and your entire family warns you not to become "a pathetic homie like her" and that you take offense to the term?
