wut, but one of the whole points about stiles was for him to be a semi-normal human amidst all the kamina/werewolf/hunter fuckery going on

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
STOP MARATHONING!

I watched the whole series in a single weekend, and it COMPLETELY burned me out on Scott. I thought I hated him, just because he BORED me so badly. But now that I've been watching it in spurts, or single episodes, he's far less obnoxious. Scott is awesome!

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Space it out! The show isn't that well written to begin with but when you marathon it all of the annoying bits are so much more noticeable and things that would irk are suddenly things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
You know what? That actually might be why I don't like him. So boring. And I like the actor!

Or maybe not, I hate most of the characters on that show.

don't you have some shitty sterek fic to write OP. go do that and spare the rest of us.

But he already let her off with no consequences? I had a truckload of problems with the finale, but one of the most rage-inducing moments was the scene where he told her that everything was alright. What, you stupid motherfucker! No, her behavior was not fine by any standards.

Scott has his moments, but this romance crap has passed the point where it was even bearable.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT was the most rage inducing moment? not when stiles didn't tell anyone erica and boyd were trapped in creepy grandpas basement? not when jackson didn't die the death he deserved? or MOUNTAIN ASSSSHHHHHHHH? when lydia served no purpose other than being a plot piece for dudes?

Yeah, I like Scott so much better when he and Allison are apart tbh.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yikes, you kind of missed the whole point of his character. He is SUPPOSED to be the Clark Kent type, to contrast his animalistic violent werewolf side, he is a kind boy who always does what he feels is just and right. That's pretty much the point of the entire show.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably missed it while re-watching all of the seconds that Stiles and Derek spent together to play up their epic (apparent) man-love.

I'm pretty sure most of your fandom agrees with the sentiment, OP.

As an outsider whose only exposure has been through online osmosis, up until very recently I wasn't aware Scott even existed, let alone was the main character.

Stiles would lose his charm with super powers. He's working the "can I seriously keep up with the supernatural menagerie" thing :U

You sound like the kind of Stiles stan that rags on Scott's character for having faults, but overlooks his because he's your precious fave or something tbh. Though I do get the Scott irritation in s1 tbf.
nan: ([tw] Derek/Stiles -come a little closer)

[personal profile] nan 2013-03-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to all of this.

[personal profile] atgdng 2013-03-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess everyone's perceptions of a 'good' protagonist are different, but I think a lot of people like the Clark Kent archetype, and he plays it pretty well, so I don't really understand that part of your secret.

That said, he bores the shit out of me, since I have...roughly nada in common with a teenage boy. And, I don't know, Allison's actions were shitty, but everyone in that finale decided to be giant dicks.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They definitely were trying to top each other in the Who's the biggest asshole contest. After the finale there aren't any sympathetic characters left, besides the sheriff and Scott's mom.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I really wish we had gotten to see more of Scott before he was bitten so we could see the contrast. His personality and his friendship with Stiles make more sense if you realize he used to be a loser kid who'd never had a girlfriend and whose asthma made walking through the woods difficult. He's really not that different from Isaac, Erica, or Boyd. Instead, though, we see some superpowered kid with a super hot girlfriend whose family's been trying to kill him.

I like Scott ;>; He's like a lost wet puppy who just needs to be taken in from the rain. He's so harmless I can never understand why people hate him so. Plus, him and Stiles are awesome bros together.

Sure Scott can be Allison crazy, but girl got game, man.

Also I love all his scenes with Danny. He is beautiful.

eurgh no to supernatural!Stiles. That doesn't work for so many reasons; because it's against his character as established, for one, and for another a lot of his appeal is rooted in his identity as a human struggling to cope in a non-human world. The danger of his situation intensifies our perception of his loyalty to Scott and his bravery, because he sticks around despite the fact that he could just quit. If he were a werewolf, or a witch or what have you, he'd be sucked into that world -- his participation would no longer be voluntary, and thus not as reckless nor courageous. Similarly, he and Scott work as a duo because Scott is the moral force, and Stiles is the pragmatist willing to put morals aside; also by and large Stiles contributes his intelligence and Scott contributes his strength (physical and of heart). They're well-balanced. If Stiles were the wolf, he'd seem somewhat overpowered.

I like Scott. I think he gets an unfair amount of hate because fans tend to prioritize the goals dictated by the plot (such as stop the alpha), and Scott often prioritizes Allison over the plot. He also exists in a narrative that rewards noble idealism, whereas I feel many fans tend to side with the more amoral but highly pragmatic Stilinski & Hale method of problem-solving: kill it. The text's insistence on Scott's noble character means some fans feel that we're supposed to accept his flaws as positive attributes. (I personally find that kind of flaw much more irritating than a flaw the text acknowledges as a personality problem.) Overall, though, I think these factors create a downward-trending hate spiral for Scott that he doesn't deserve. He's a good hero and a good kid.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I always think I'd like him if he just hadn't met Allison.
