Again I say - Boyd is one of very few minor characters where we have almost NO backstory whatsoever. Pretty much all we know about him is that he is a loner without a ton of money who works at an ice rink. And now he's a werewolf. That's it. We didn't even have a full name for him until it was released outside of the context of the show. The two other new betas, however, were given some reasonably involved backstories, or had a large amount of interaction with the main characters. There doesn't appear to be any real reason for Boyd to have been pushed to the back, especially considering he is the closest to a second or head-beta that Derek has. The only reason is assumed to be that Boyd is a POC, specifically a black man. I don't think it necessarily is, but it's a pretty large discrepancy between three relatively equal characters.

I agree that some of the cries of racism aren't always warranted IMO, but the fact that POCs in the fandom are hurt by it makes me more aware of it. If people are hurt by it, why would you do it?
