reading sports manga/watching sports anime for the sports

lol

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
mte. especially if it's printed somewhere like Jump. the popular/mainstream shounen demographic was never about realism (hi Tenipuri, Mr. Fullswing, Eyeshield, etc.).

basically people like OP always make me laugh and smh.

I think it's funny, too. But I don't like any sport, really. Is there a manga about croquet?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I BET there is. I'm not interested in it so I won't look, but I'd bet you.

[personal profile] cadremage 2013-03-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I would read that. Croquet is so dramatic.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but there's one about curling.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwwwwwwwww. Am I the only one who finds this cute? Usually this kind of indignation is expressed over misrepresentation of law, or police work, or forensics, or science, or more science, or I could tell you a few things about how universities do not work, for that matter. And OP is miffed about badly mangled basketball.

Go for it, OP! I fully support an educated person's right to throw tantrums when media totally bungles something in your field of expertise, and there's no reason this shouldn't extend to sports. Just don't be surprised if you don't much traction, okay?

I don't really think it's the same. You can learn the rules of basketball and everything in it in about twenty minutes. Science is always changing and it is way, way, WAY more vast. I can forgive bad science for the most part but, c'mon, a quick look on wiki will give you the rules of how basketball is played. Not knowing the rules just smacks of laziness.

Won't argue with you about the mangled basketball - heck, I haven't expected any "proper basketball" ever since, like, five chapters in, and poking fun at the ridiculousness is one reason I'm still reading. "Ugly art", though? Sure, the art started out wonky and even now it's nothing special, but I'm actually pretty fond of the art by this point.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of Kurobasu fans come from Tenipuri fandom. Go figure.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually don't know much about basketball, I'm more of an association football person. I know like the barest minimum of basketball rules (you have to get the ball into the basket, and if you throw the ball in from very far, you get 3 points), but I still read the manga for the sports. I don't know a thing about baseball, but I still read Diamond no Ace, I didn't know a thing about American football when I read Eyeshield 21. Because sports series are not about perfect knowledge of rules, they are about excitement, team spirit, determination, friendship, and the will to follow one's dreams. And sports series have all these things, there is much more to them than 'cute boys'. So I judge you right back for dismissing people like me who actually do read it for reasons other than eye-candy.

Aww, you're so cute! When has a sports manga ever accurately represented the sport it's ostensibly about?

Sports manga have always played pretty fast and loose with the actual rules of the sport for the sake of character drama or whatever. Not saying that's good or right or whatever, just that it's just kind of how the genre works.

This secret just makes me wonder if that weird stalker sending death threats and stuff to the author/places associated with him/conventions in Japan is still at it.

If you want realism in your basketball manga, you probably shouldn't look for it in a super-popular Jump series... Give REAL a shot instead!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Try "Slam Dunk". Takehiko Inoue might have traced some photos there and there, but...

the fandom can be annoying, i'll give you that. but like everyone else said, expecting realism from a jump sports manga (slam dunk aside)? oh, OP.

also, eh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. i find the guys attractive.

Excuse me, it has cute boys AND porn of said cute boys. Of course it's going to be popular.

In all seriousness, I just started reading and, while I don't see the appeal of Kuroko's old pals, I can't help but love the main guys team. :( Captain Glasses is the coolest, everyone else go home. 8(

I'm with you, OP. Too bad we're in the minority so we don't get as many manga and way fewer anime targeted toward our interests. There are still gems out there though.

Man, I don't know why you're getting so much shit just for asking that a manga actually knows how its MAIN SUBJECT MATTER works. Asking for minimum standards and research is 'cute' apparently.
