Re: Movies you've seen this week?
- Femme Fatale and Dressed to Kill by Brian De Palma,
- Hard Boiled by John Woo, which was kinda cool in a how can they make such a bad movie way, and half the plot was stolen from Die Hard
- Bitter Moon by Roman Polanski, to be honest I only got through half of it
- The Social Network by David Fincher, which wasn't as bad as I feared.
I also have to get through Carrie by Brian De Palma, The Ghost Writer by Roman Polanski, North by Northwest by Alfred Hitchcock and Persona by Ingmar Bergman this weekend, because I kinda skipped the lectures they showed them in. And I have to analyse all of them, actually there are 25 films I have to watch in the upcoming weeks and I have to analyse at least 10 of them.
Re: Movies you've seen this week?
Since you're watching lots of Brian De Palma, have you watched Blow Out, out of curiosity? It's one of those movies where I like/appreciate parts of it (importance of sound), but the lead actress is just not very good, which makes it not as fun to watch.
I love North By Northwest, but I'm a Hitchock fan. :)
Re: Movies you've seen this week?
I am watching lots of Brian De Palma, because my Professor loves him, personally I don't enjoy his style. Mission Impossible is basically the only film that he directed that I enjoy. Blow out sounds a lot like both Femme Fatale and Dressed to kill. We talked about De Palma as an Auteur* on Thursday (because as the first group this subject I had to present Femme Fatales story telling and style) and he tends to do the Style over Story thing...
I haven't really watched a lot of Hitchcock stuff to be honest, but what I've seen I have enjoyed.
We don't even get offered a Japanese Film class at my University... I am taking Film and Television Analysis right now, and I hate analysing stuff. And I am not a film person I am a television person so it isn't exactly my favourite subject.
Oh and *Film student fist bump*. And because I am curious, what do you plan on doing with your Film degree? And which one are you getting?
*is that the correct English word?
Re: Movies you've seen this week?
De Palma.. yeah, I agree with you. Actually, most of my professors have been pretty mixed about him, tending to agree that he focuses more on style over substance, but Blow Out is a favorite mostly for focusing on sound in film, when most courses/studies focus on the visual aspect. (and yep, Auteur is the correct English world :))
Psycho and Rear Window are my personal favorites, though I probably prefer Rear Window, actually. I like directors/films where there's both a lot of interesting stylistic choices as well as good substance in the story, and ultimately I think Hitchcock does a good job about that.
I go to a really large university (one of the top five biggest universities in the United States), so I'm glad that I can study both film and Japanese. I like analysis, but some of my theory classes have gotten really intense. I'm taking one now where half of the time the theory doesn't even mention film/tv, which kind of frustrates me.
I'm more of a TV person too, myself! I wish more courses focused on Television, because I think it's very interesting. Probably my favorite course of my degree was the main television course.
*Film student fist bump* I want to go into Television production, actually; I'm taking a Film Studies degree (more theory) mostly because it's what my university offers as opposed to a production degree (I switched into film studies in my second year). I think I want to be a Production Manager/Coordinator, because in my last production course I really liked being a production manager on one of our projects.
Re: Movies you've seen this week?
My current main professor loves De Palma, then again he is pretty much in love with everything even remotely related to films... He is completely new at lecturing (his Masters degree was finished about 3 weeks ago) and is pretty overexcited about everything.
Rear Window was pretty fun actually, I should really get around to watching the rest of them.
Oh that is cool, I study at a tiny University College in Norway (though the best in Norway at film and television studies), and our Uni is pretty specialized in Film and Television (though some other degrees are taught too).
Same with me, I am getting a Bachelors (then Masters) in Film and Television studies, they keep forgetting the television part in some of our subjects thouhg.
Ohh! So am I! We will be each others competition! I could do the Production route too (They offer Bachelors in that at my school), but I don't want to limit myself too much. And casting seems like a fun job too. Failing that I will teach at an University and just get a doctorate in Film and Television.
Re: Movies you've seen this week?
My degree's technically called "Studies in Cinema and Media Culture," so film is a main focus, but I do like the media culture part.
Oh, cool! I don't know if it's different in Norway/Europe, but I know that in the US you don't necessarily need a degree in production to get a production job, so we should be fine, I think. :) Casting sounds really good, too; when I first started thinking about going into film/tv I wanted to do editing or screenwriting, but I really like the idea of being a Production Coordinator/Manager or something in that area. Don't think I'd want to teach at a University, myself, but if I can't find work in this field at all I have a couple of ideas of back-up plans.
Re: Movies you've seen this week?
I want to take some media culture subjects too, but my school don't offer a lot of them.
Yeah, you don't really need a degree in anything to work in film. But it helps. And when you get a degree it is better to have a wider degree because then they can use you for more than one thing. It is all up to timing and luck though.
I will be okay if I end up teaching at a Uni, my back up plan if everything fails in film and tv is to become a prison guard though. Which in Norway is a caring (like nursing) job, also if you get into the school you are guaranteed a job.
