Movies you've seen this week?

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2013-03-23 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Self-explanatory, what movies have you seen and enjoyed this week?

I just watched Skyfall with my dad, and apart from the questionable shower scene and the fact that the concept of "Bond girls" kind of weirds me out, I really really enjoyed it. Frankly, a lot of action movies kind of bore me if the action sequences are too long, but this was really fun. Also, kind of ashamed to admit it, but my first Bond movie.

I also saw Silver Lining's Playbook again, and still loved it. I know some people who had issues with various parts of it, and I get you, but I think it dealt with the subjects at hand well and was just a lot of fun.

Currently finishing up Safety Not Guaranteed (wow, third movie that starts with an 'S' this week), which I'm really enjoying, as well. Though I spent forever staring at the main actor before realizing he was from The League; it kept bugging me wondering who he was. It's weird seeing Aubrey Plaza in a leading role, but she does a good job.

I have The Matrix, Jurassic Park (I think I'll wait for the 3d Release next month, I've never seen it) and Kill Bill Vol. 2 on my DVR.

Well, last weekish I saw Escape From Planet Earth, which was not as bad as it looked. That's not to say it wasn't pretty bland.

I saw Vol. 1 of Kill Bill last week too. I like it well enough, though I found some of the fight moves performed by The Bride to be (even more) OTT.

That reminds me I have to watch the Kill Bill films again...

Watched There Will Be Blood for the first time thursday night, and thought it was amazing!! It was so intense that I don't think I'll watch it again for a long time, but it was incredibly beautiful and my partner and I agreed that we liked it better than Lincoln (I guess we were comparing them because of DDL getting an Oscar)

I liked lots about the movie, but I found the guns everywhere in SNG super upsetting and couldn't enjoy it! Maybe because I'm from somewhere where gun ownership is extremely low??? or maybe there were just a lot of mass shootings in the news that week and I would be more chill now, I don't know...

I watched Do The Right Thing for a paper for my American Media course last week.

Seriously, why on earth have I never seen this before now? I rewound it and watched the entire thing again ten minutes after I finished it, and I have never done that with a movie before.

Do the Right Thing's really excellent; I keep watching it for film class stuff, and it's a really great film.

I saw a guy in denim cut offs walking down the street carrying an actual boom box on one shoulder last week. And then I realized he was playing Public Enemy and I had a mini "DUDE HAVE YOU SEEN DO THE RIGHT THING WE SHOULD WATCH THAT" freak out at my friend. I feel you will appreciate this!!!

Uh...just The Hobbit, I think.

I got the Blu-Ray + DVD version and sadly the DVD has no commentary and the special features are on a Blu-Ray disc, so I have to wait till I buy another PS3 to watch any of it. :(

That's annoying; I'm a big special features person, so waiting for that would not be fun :(

Film student here so I've watched, but not enjoyed all of them:
- Femme Fatale and Dressed to Kill by Brian De Palma,
- Hard Boiled by John Woo, which was kinda cool in a how can they make such a bad movie way, and half the plot was stolen from Die Hard
- Bitter Moon by Roman Polanski, to be honest I only got through half of it
- The Social Network by David Fincher, which wasn't as bad as I feared.

I also have to get through Carrie by Brian De Palma, The Ghost Writer by Roman Polanski, North by Northwest by Alfred Hitchcock and Persona by Ingmar Bergman this weekend, because I kinda skipped the lectures they showed them in. And I have to analyse all of them, actually there are 25 films I have to watch in the upcoming weeks and I have to analyse at least 10 of them.

As a film student myself I know how that goes, haha. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate for your classes, though. I'm taking a Japanese film class now, and while I like a lot of what I've watched it's kind of slow going for some of them.

Since you're watching lots of Brian De Palma, have you watched Blow Out, out of curiosity? It's one of those movies where I like/appreciate parts of it (importance of sound), but the lead actress is just not very good, which makes it not as fun to watch.

I love North By Northwest, but I'm a Hitchock fan. :)

Don't worry, Skyfall was also my first Bond film. I enjoyed the cinematography, and I also agree how it was fun since I don't like lots-of-action movies.

While it's a documentary, I saw The Island President. I found it incredibly interesting, and really enjoyed how it followed the history of the Maldives and followed the President. The end was disheartening, of course.

I finally got around to seeing Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians. And I actually want a sequel to the both of them NOW.

I finally watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

It was really good, but I didn't cry. I didn't find it very heartbreaking, more just awesomely symbolic and beautifully shot.

And then I just rewatched the Bourne Series(minus the Jeremy Renner one, nothx on that ew)
SO FUCKING AWESOME. I can safely say those three are like on my top favorite series. Also Pamela Landy is my feminist hero.

Unf, Eternal Sunshine is my favorite movie ever. I love that not only is it an absolutely gorgeous film, but I really love the script as well.

umm the only movie I saw for the first time this week was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which I thought was totally adorable.

I saw Bright Star last Tuesday (I'm slowly going through Ben Whishaw's filmography). It was kind of a horrible experience because obviously I knew how it would end, and I was all alone in my flat, with no one to talk to. The end was very bleak (and not very historically accurate from what I've read) so I was a wreck afterwards. I felt really depressed the following day (I feel much better now!).

I watched Lincoln, which I thought was decent but overrated, and The Fall, which I think is gorgeous and full of Lee Pace and that was all I wanted from it on my second viewing.

I watched Stoker a couple of days ago, and it was all kind of messed up, but fascinating too. Really good, and interesting if you're not easily disturbed.

This WEEK? I haven't seen a movie yet this year...

Yeah, I'm really not much of a consumer of any media beyond video games anymore. XD The idea of assuming that people watch even one movie a week, let alone several, is so completely foreign to me I did a double-take at the subject line here. (Not ragging on you or anything - just had one of those particularly intense "Whoa, I'm not normal, am I?" moments.)

The movie based on the game Clue, with the same title. I don't think that movie will ever not be entertaining.

Saw Wreck-It Ralph (whoops, I mean Sugar Rush) in Japanese yesterday and absolutely loved it. Can't wait to see the original! *_*

Watched the 1991 Robin Hood with Jurgen Prochnow doing the impossible of chewing scenery while gnashing his teeth, Uma Thurman in a trouser role, and an entire shot devoted to Jeroen Krabbe standing up and sighing. Perhaps the whole thing is summed up by a cheerfully murderous Friar Tuck shouting, "Welcome to Hell!"

The only film I've watched this week (in whole at least, usually I channel surf between movies on the movie channels and episodes of "Chopped" or something when I'm watching tv) is "Chandni".
I fangirl squeed when I realized it was one of the Bollywood films I loved as a child that I had watched dubbed in my language (because if I was Indian I'm sure I wouldn't have been so clueless about this film). I had forgotten about this film completely, and came across this movie by pure chance. I was surfing around Netflix for Bollywood films to put into my Instant Queue a few weeks back (a hobby of mine since I just started getting back into Bollywood films like 5 years ago) and I saw "Chandni" and thought, "Let's see if this old one is good," because I honestly like the older Bollywood films more.
So here I was this Saturday morning, after 12 hours of work and about an hour of driving in terrible snow covered streets, I decide to finally check out one of the old Bollywood films I had saved onto my Instant Queue. When Rishi's Kapoor's character reveals to Sridevi's character that he had adorned all the walls of his room with pictures he took of her I squeed and exclaimed to myself, "OH MY GOSH THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES I LOVED AS A KID!" Watching it over again, I was like...so happy and filled with nostalgia. I loved that I only remember bits and pieces of this film because I wanted to know what would happen next and how the film would play out when I watched it.
I generally base my love of Bollywood movies more on the music and dance numbers, and this one is one of the great ones. LOVE the music and Sridevi's dance numbers in this film reminded me of how much I wanted to dance like her, Madhuri Dixit, and Juhi Chawla when I was a kid. This film didn't have flashy and big dance numbers but all we needed was Sridevi's dance skills in this movie. I had no idea this film is a super iconic film until I read up on it on Wiki later today. But another thing that makes this film stand out is that the story is engaging, which is kind of hard to do in most Bollywood films. Many seem contrived or a little too melodramatic for my liking. This movie is pretty melodramatic but it's believable because the actors did a great job, and the music goes well with the film.
Sorry for the tl;dr fangirl rant. My best friend and I were on the phone discussing this movie, and we began spewing about old Bollywood films we want to see again but can't find. He and I do this from time to time.
