Dream career

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I've been on and off about this idea for years now and it's driving me crazy with my university graduation coming up. I've been to my careers service and they were no help at all, thinking I was just being indecisive, but I was just generally worried how well a softie would be in the police service? I'm an INFP who gets emotional at any sappy thing (and I felt embarrassed at saying this to my careers service) but I had always watched police/detective dramas when I grew up and I've grown a huge respect for the police. I understand it's not gonna be like in the media, but I can't shake off the idea of how much I want to be in the police.

tl;dr I'm just conflicted on if my personality will clash with my career choice. Just wanted to vent because I'm now worried about the fitness test because my eyesight's pretty bad, but I literally would go through eye surgery if that meant I had a shot at this career.

Could be a thread about if anyone else decided against a dream career for reasons?

Where are you based?

The UK lets you volunteer doing the actual job (as in you will hold the office of constable with the same rights and responsibilities) if you can set aside the time for training, and meet the requirements. And I've heard other places do similar schemes. Worth considering if possible to get you a feel for what it's like to be out on the beat.

Great career if you can get it - decent pay, varied work, great pension, solid job security, etc, and you honestly might find yourself surprised by just what you're capable of.

Oh and go for a force in a major city if at all possible.

Yup, UK based! I was hoping to apply to be a special constable but it appears that there's no free roles available right now... Volunteering for my local police force also seems to have a huge backlog, but I'll keep checking back for volunteer roles.

I honestly never thought about the wage aspect of it, but that does sound reassuring!

I suggest you use your personal network to find law enforcement professionals to talk with. Particularly if one of them has a similar personality to yours. You might not do well on the street or patrolling, but surely there are other ways you could work in law enforcement. There's always a chance that a friend of a friend or family member might know someone.

If you haven't already, try reading up on the net, maybe finding professional police communities or forums and lurking for a while. See what you can find out. Also look at any police or detective documentaries. While not completely free of Hollywood's artistic license, they'd likely be more accurate than most fictional films.

Good luck!! I challenged my shy nature to try for my current dream job, and I bagged it. It's possible! C:

Hmm honestly I have been quiet about pursuing this career, but this is an idea to consider! There's actually a local police station just 5 minutes away from my house actually! Though I thought it was rude to just turn up and ask about jobs when the city's own website wasn't advertising any volunteer jobs.

I never considered watching documentaries, but that'd be good to look up too!

Wow, I'm really happy for you! I hope you continue along that road!

For one of my brother's senior project, he shadowed a local deputy sheriff for a while. I think I remember there being an official form for it as well. It might just be because we lived in a fairly rural, low crime area, but it's worth looking to see if your town/city/thingum has something similar. :)

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the concept of sheriffs (UK and city based), but that soounds really exciting!
