It should have been John Stewart. It's ridiculous that it wasn't John Stewart. He's the Green Lantern with whom the key demographic grew up. Everyone who wasn't asking 'who the hell is the Green Lantern?' was asking 'why the hell is Green Lantern white?'

But I hear we're killing off John Stewart next in the New-52 cull of diversity, so I guess the next time they reboot there won't be that problem. Blah.

No, John Stewart is going to be OK!

Not that this in any way makes up for how shitty the New 52 is in general.

Come be tired with me. It makes all the comments 3000x more bewildering.

I just read this comment thinking you meant John Stewart from the Daily Show should have played John Stewart as Green Lantern. I spent a whole three seconds trying to figure out how that would have fixed the white thing and why you thought John Stewart could pull off a superhero summer blockbuster.

FUCK yeah, it should have been John! I remember being so disappointed when GL came out and it wasn't about him. :(

John Stewart was the GL I grew up with, I really don't care for any other GL except him :c

I don't know anything about the Green Lantern, so I was wondering why you spelled Jon Stewart's name wrong for a second.

I like Stewart way more than Captain Wonderbread myself but let's not kid ourselves: Hal Jordan is far more famous than Stewart ever was. Stewart was a relative unknown until the cartoon, which isn't even that old.

What they should have done is a story with all three of the original pre-Crisis Lanterns.

Sorry OP, but no. The writing was shit. The directing was fine IF you knew the background but lousy for anything else (For example, we see Hal's relationship with his family is strained, which they got right, but the casual non-comic reading viewer has no idea WHY. Sinestro's corruption makes little sense because we get no hints of him being anything other then a bitter hardass that misses his friend until the stinger) But I don't think they could have done Kyle, John or Guy any better under the circumstances.

Am I the only person who thought Hal's character in this movie was pretty good? I mean, yeah, pretty bad for the Green Lantern concept and all, but the movie was dumb enough that I didn't bother caring about that, and instead I just enjoyed the "random annoying idiot asshole gets magic ring out of nowhere, now has to clean up his act and become a proper superhero" plot.

Maybe would've worked better in a less crappy movie, but still, the scene of Hal sitting in front of the lantern with a "wtf am I even bothering with this shit" expression and randomly going "uh...to infinity and beyond!" is one of my favorite superhero movie scenes ever.

The problems were in the script, not the character.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to use this macro.

I can see your point. But my only major problem with it was that I imagine if my fiance hadn't given me a few plot-appropriate comics to read before we saw the film (like Secret Origin) I might have been confused about wtf was going on at some points. On the flip side, having read those comics meant I was really annoyed with what they did to Hector Hammond for some reason.

I'm just glad it's Hal that starred in that mess. I don't get to associate any of the other lanterns with a bad actor's face :)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
They should have gone with the Black Green Lantern, but they were too afraid that the flop of Hancock meant that America wasn't ready for a Black superhero. They were probably right too.

Haha, no. If it had been John Stewart and didn't do well, they would have no doubt blamed its lack of success on the black guy instead of, say, bad writing, confusing presentation, and dubious acting.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
That the movie stunk has nothing to do with Hal Jordan being the focus, and everything to do with the fact that Ryan Reynolds is a bad actor.

Yeah, but the guys in charge, especially at DC, are only interested in making the heroes of THEIR childhood and nothing else.

I don't recall his name at the moment, but the Green Lantern of the JLA comics was the one I was introduced to, the one who was an artist? that guy. I loved him because his creativity led him to do all kind of nifty things with the ring, like he wouldn't make a basic glider to fly with, he'd make a chariot pulled by pegasi. He was awesome.

I think that every time there's a Green Lantern secret someone mentions people growing with this or that GL and I wonder if GL is really that much more popular in the US and other countries than here or if it's just an age thing. We had a lot of Marvel and DC cartoons here when I was growing up but no GL. Where in the world did he appear?

[personal profile] avatarmn 2013-03-26 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, but the movie character bore virtually no resemblance to the comic book version of Hal Jordan. Had they used another character, they'd probably have completely changed him, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Pfft, Hal Jordan IS Green Lantern. Green Lantern is Hal Jordan. Your argument is invalid.

Even though I've never liked Hal Jordan, I'm going to disagree. The movie was just plain not good. Picking (in my opinion) the most boring GL didn't help, but the script was funky, the quality of the special effects was all over the place, and the pacing was totally fucked. The big climatic battle felt more like the second act. I was actually surprised when the credits rolled.
