Yes, yes, and I would still rather not have known them at all than have to live with the fact that they're gone.

Is this a recent loss? I can't tell if you're speaking of an earthly loss or a rejection, which ime differs the reaction. I don't want to come off as all condescending about how *you* feel but you may still be grieving (either way). I could be wrong but I've been there and came out on a different side eventually. But you know you best and values differ. I just can't imagine ever truly believing not knowing someone I loved is better than having whatever time I did with them in the long run.

I didn't make the post because of any recent loss, but because it's an opinion I hold that has been germane before in my life, and nobody ever seems to agree. But no, it was never rejection; I had actually never thought of rejection as being relevant to the adage. I'm sure it is for some people, but it never crossed my mind in that way.

Huh. I'm just stuck on the thought of someone preferring to live a lonely life devoid of emotional connections and meaningful moments rather than experience loss. Is this an opinion that affects your relationships?

Really? This goes for everyone you've ever loved? Relatives? Pets? You know it doesn't necessarily mean romantic love right?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed, and I wasn't talking (solely) about romantic love to begin with. Can't miss what you never had.

DA

Except that you totally can. People are social animals by nature; even the most introverted of introverts needs some human contact and emotional connections. When you see people around you in happy and loving relationships (romantic and otherwise), how can you not miss that, even if (especially if) you've never had it yourself? Never experiencing love of any kind with another person seems so... desolate.

I do get close to people. I just wish I'd never known them once they leave.
