See also Evangelion fandom for the perfect example of male shipfags.

I don't think there's much that matches the sheer level of intensity and obsession.

But why is it a competition in the first place?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Because men who live in glass houses like to belittle women for having ridiculous opinions about fictional characters.

Pretty much, yeah.

I've never actually seen people say that shipping is a girls-only thing. Not saying you're a liar or anything, but I feel like people don't say this as often as your secret seems to make it sound.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound new to the internet. I'd say underage b&, but that might fly over your head.

I *have* seen people bash others who don't like whatever the canon het couple is as just being butthurt slash fangirls though. That one I see all the time.

This. My best fandom friend is a guy and he's a more hardcore shipper than I, just to mention the one person. I know plenty of male shippers around my fandom, so I wouldn't say that it's a girl/guy problem. Shipping wars and all are just fandom problems.

I see it all the time. Usually I see it in a more subtle way that implies it's girls doing all the shipping, without outright saying it (for example "Uggh I hate those fangirls who keep pairing X with Y they're so stupid this isn't Twilight!"). But I've seen outright "Boys don't ship!" attitudes, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I last saw someone say it yesterday. And on a board with a male majority where everyone tends to assume you're male. Except if you ship. And the canon here revolves around romantic relationships.

The "only girls ship, we manly men only care about the important stuff" argument is hilarious.

I would find it hilarious if most of my male friends and family members weren't always saying it.

Yeah, I kind of agree except I think most people ship something, although they might not use that term. Whether it was noticing Scully/Mulder ust, or hoping a canon couple finally has a happy ending, or rooting for a certain outcome during love triangles, it's all pretty much shipping. Tumblr, and definitely Homestuck, probably made "shipping" and saying "I ship this" more common than it used to be outside of fandom circles.

idk

It still bugs me when fangirls are derided for shipping when fanboys also do the same (seconding anon's poke at Eva fans).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
homestuck? Seriously? I don't think so... that term was popular long before homestuck existed

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa whoa whoa, the term "shipping" has been around and in extremely popular usage since waaaay before Homestuck. X-Files fandom invented the term, and it's been in the common fandom lexicon since then, so we're talking since the 90s.

People who say men don't ship haven't met the Talimancers from 'Mass Effect'.

Yep.

It's not a girls-only thing.

But it's definitely more likely to be the only goddamn thing they care about.
See: Homestuck, Supernatural, Avengers, etc.
