Yeah, I kind of agree except I think most people ship something, although they might not use that term. Whether it was noticing Scully/Mulder ust, or hoping a canon couple finally has a happy ending, or rooting for a certain outcome during love triangles, it's all pretty much shipping. Tumblr, and definitely Homestuck, probably made "shipping" and saying "I ship this" more common than it used to be outside of fandom circles.

idk

It still bugs me when fangirls are derided for shipping when fanboys also do the same (seconding anon's poke at Eva fans).

homestuck? Seriously? I don't think so... that term was popular long before homestuck existed

When I say "fandom circles" I mean fandom outside of livejournal, mailing lists, ff.net/ao3, etc.

Whoa whoa whoa, the term "shipping" has been around and in extremely popular usage since waaaay before Homestuck. X-Files fandom invented the term, and it's been in the common fandom lexicon since then, so we're talking since the 90s.

Not so popular that people outside of fandom would encounter it.

Which has nothing to do with Homestuck. It is just a general trend these days that fandom is seen as less of a weird thing and that many show executives are starting to open the dialogue with fandom in a whole new way.

Not just Homestuck ofc. With tumblr, it's given signal boosting trends in fandom helped a signal boost itself so much that it's hard not to notice if you visit the site.

Regarding HS, I just thought the crossover between "normal" fans and fandom helped make it easier to actually bring up shipping, as calling it shipping, in places like /co/ or gamefaqs like above anon mentioned. And as I said before, idk. I'm not really citing anything to go by or am a fandom historian or anything, rather just going by what I notice :U

no, you're just a homestuck fan who is seeing the evolution of a certain thing from the perspective of your fandom. *Absolutely* tumblr has made concepts like "shipping" more popular in the mainstream. But what kinds of things REALLY made it a term that a random person who isn't in fandom might understand? Fanfic that gets published; fanart that is put on talk shows to be discussed by actors; etc.
A random person on the street doesn't give two shits about homestuck but might actually know that Fifty shades of Grey is Twilight fanfic... so that's a lot likelier to have brought the concept of shipping to the forefront.

Isn't that exactly what I just said?

This; oh the days of the "relationshippers" and the "Noromos" <3

Of which I know mostly from finding X-Files fandom way late in the game. But. Better late than never, I guess.
