He gets shit? Why? I get that he is a bit of a melodramatic brat, but so are all kids at that age. I reserve my hate for the writers who persist in devaluing adoptive parents by insinuating that only a birth mother is a true mother. Emma gave him up, and while I'll hate on Regina for a lot of her crap, she had no right to come back into his life at all. Of course, then we'd have no series, but the writers could throw in a bit more ambiguity around that and have made Regina a little more in the right on that issue alone than they did. Yes I am adopted, in case you didn't guess.

You mean like how Henry keeps insisting that Regina is his mom too and refusing to let people hurt her and getting upset when they think poorly of her? That kind of devaluing?

Regina is toxic because she repeatedly tries to kill the people he cares about, not because blood conquers all.

I think that /Emma's/ view of her being the mother is one thing but it's obvious that the writer's value Regina and Henry's relationship just as much, it's just that Regina is the evil queen and continually does things to reprove it.

People need to separate the writer and the character's.

Wait, wait, he ever acknowledges that Regina is the one who raised him? I'm only partway through the first season and the reason I dislike the kid is because he seems to have absolutely no affection for Regina at all. It just comes across as flat and that the writers are trying to shove Regina Is Evil down my throat when come on! She's the evil queen! She can be evil all by herself!

The second season deals more with the relationship between Henry and Regina.

It's not improved in the second season. He's just learned to manipulate Regina for his benefit. He only acknowledges Regina when it's convenient for him and the Charming's purposes. Like when Emma and Snow were returning from FTL, and he's begging Regina to help them. And when she does, what does he do? I'm not sure, maybe he hugs Regina for 2 seconds before he goes off to really hug Emma and Snow and go home w/them. He always does that. Regina thinks he's really gonna spend time for her/hug her/care for her and he doesn't. The kid's an ass. And the actor is terrible and comes across as smug all the freakin' time.

I wouldn't think that just because Regina decided not to kill Emma and Snow when Henry begged her that she is safe to be around. I don't remember her actually helping them return from FTL, she just...didn't kill them on their way in.

It is less about the characters themselves and more the writers and producers reinforcing that media meme (which is a pretty offensive one) by creating the situation of Evil Adoptive (single) Parent who needs to be swept aside by the returning repentant birth mother who is the only true mother. Its a meme the media and tv uses far too often, and is often used by abusive birth parents to regain access to kids over the wishes of adoptive and foster parents to the detriment of the kids. Its the assumption presented that all adopted kids must simply want their birth mother and be prepared to seek them out to cast off the adoptive parents. It gets thrown in the faces of adoptive kids and parents a lot.

There must have been a better way to kick off the plot than to wheel out that old tired and offensive trope. It isn't the characters, it is the situation.

Its hard to like an Uncle Tom. The kid's first act in the whole show is to go through the whole magical biological parents are da bomb.

I hate the way he goes back and forth between "Regina's NOT my mom!!" "You can't do anything to her! She's my MOM!!"

Maybe they're not being inconsistent, they're trying to show that he's just two-faced. *is reaching*

Or- just maybe- they're trying to show that he's eleven. And conflicted. Because his adopted mom and his biological mom are at war and he loves both of them.

But he's probably actually evil and two-faced. Children are, after all, just small adults.

I would by that if -- at any point before Henry started being all "You can't do that to my MOM!" -- Henry had given any indication that he thought Regina was anything other than the Evil Queen, who he most certainly did not appear to love.

Ugh, this this this. I don't hate the character, but I definitely hate the writers when they write him like that.
