I remember people giving him shit because he was unhappy that his mother lied to him about his father. It's like how would you expect him to act?

I don't hate him. I just find him kind of annoying at times (which I could probably say about most of the characters actually).

This! The Henry hate (along with the Charming hate) pisses me the fuck off. He's an eleven year old kid They do shit like this.

And I don't think the actor's that bad either.

I also can't stand the Regina stans who insist she's a good mother when the woman's raped, murdered, and killed people, some of that when he was under her roof! Let's not forget the fact that SHE FUCKING MURDERED HIM when she tried to poison Emma and was lucky true's love kiss was able to bring him back. So yeah, I don't blame him for not trusting Regina.

To me, the character is so inconstantly written. He's supposed to be a character that has a set of good morals, and yet whenever he does something that can be seen as morally ambiguous, the show never calls the character out on his behavior.

And unfortunately, the actor can't rise above the dreck he's been given.

Henry's grown on me. He's used so much as a pawn between Emma and Regina and a lot of what he has to say/do isn't written the best, so I chalk it up to sloppy writing as why so many people hate him.

I'm neutral. Kid's not the best actor, but he does his job. Plus, I want to pinch his cheeks (I may or may not be that aunt all children hate to meet around holiday time).

MTE; like, he's hardly my favorite character, and yeah the acting isn't the greatest, but he's a kid and while there are some excellent child actors out there, finding one right for your role can be hard.

I mean, dislike Henry, find him annoying, but the hate...

He gets shit? Why? I get that he is a bit of a melodramatic brat, but so are all kids at that age. I reserve my hate for the writers who persist in devaluing adoptive parents by insinuating that only a birth mother is a true mother. Emma gave him up, and while I'll hate on Regina for a lot of her crap, she had no right to come back into his life at all. Of course, then we'd have no series, but the writers could throw in a bit more ambiguity around that and have made Regina a little more in the right on that issue alone than they did. Yes I am adopted, in case you didn't guess.

More people should be uncomfortable. The hate some fans spew for an 11 year old child is downright frightening.

I don't get it, either. He fascinates me. He's not exactly precocious, but he's not exactly just a dumb kid, either. Hell, maybe that contrast pisses people off. But I like him. I think he's a good character, and the kid playing him does a consistent job...unlike a lot of the actors lately. Geez, some of these performances...

I don't get the hate either. The guy's an ok actor which is pretty much all I ask for from a child actor.

As for the character...he's eleven, was ten at the beginning of the show. Every child near puberty is friggin' obnoxious. Work with kids and you'll see that Henry's pretty much a standard child in terms of "now he's annoying" and "now he's being adorable". And he's had a lot of shit in his life - who knows how the timeline/his aging worked out but that would mess anyone's head up for good - imaging if he'd started puberty while no one else grew, he would have no one who would go through it with him and the adults would just be all, "It's normal, get over it." Then he's lied to about everybody being normal when they're fairytale characters and his adoptive!mom is the evil queen with a vendetta against Snow White, who happens to be his grandmother. I mean, seriously? Why hate a character when he's gone through and is going through all this chaos during developmental years? It's a good thing he's not a teen when this show started, I can't imagine how many fans would hate him simply because of how hormones would react in his environment.

Idk, I think the actor is fine - he's certainly improved since s1, but that's probably because he's been given less to do haha. As for character hate - I'm one of those people. Though, the hate wouldn't nearly be as bad if he were consistantly written. He's all over the place - how am I meant to like a character who changes his opinion every episode?

I kinda ragequit actually watching this show because it refused to be boring (the fandom is more entertaining tbh. episode recaps are like the chocolate flavour substitute to this show I think I'm allergic to). That kid was annoying, so that didn't help.

But, I've been giving it another go, and... he's not as bad as I remembered the first time around. So I'm just going to agree with you, OP.

I don't hate him or want him to die -- I find him annoying the way I find all children, real or fictional, annoying. But the visceral hate he gets freaks me out too, op. And I think he's an okay actor? Not amazing, but he doesn't make me cringe as often as some child actors. I mostly feel bad because people are dicks to him on twitter and I'm like, dude, that's an actual real KID you're saying that shit to.

I feel like most people who hate him are Regina stans who think he's "ungrateful" to her or something. Ungrateful to the lying, murdering, rapist. The one who tried to make him think he was crazy. The one who tried to kill Emma even though she knew how much she means to him. It drives me crazy.

I totally agree. The people wishing death on him (mostly at ONTD, which is... well, ONTD is full of some pretty awful people so I guess I shouldn't be surprised) genuinely disturb me and I really hope they don't have kids because I would fear for those kids.

It's Wesley Crusher-itis. Sometimes they defer to him a little bit too much. I don't get why the adults are so accommodating. For example, the running off into the woods with god damn dynamite? They didn't even yell at him for doing something so dangerously stupid, much less punish him.

The kid is way better than most of the tiny unfortunate children they employ on that show. The girl who plays Young Snow and, more recently, the boy who played Owen just KILLED me. I've rarely seen more cringeworthy child actors!
