trades. (any sports fans here?)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
My favourite player is about to be traded to a team I loathe and I don't know how I'm going to stomach it.

He's been on the same pro team all his career and my absolute favourite for over a decade. The very thought depressed me. I know that sounds kind of pathetic but I just wanted to vent somewhere. :(

:( I know this feeling, anon. I really don't have any good advice for you, other than the sport and its money will keep on turning, and you as a fan have to decide what it is you really support, your team or your player.

I can easily support both to an extent what with them being in opposite conferences and one team totally tanking (the one he's about to leave).

I get that he has a way better chance of a championship if he joins... Well anyone he's rumored to be going. And I'd love to see that, sure. Just a tough pill to swallow, haha.

I know how you feel! It's okay to feel that way.

I know a lot of NJ Devils fans that duct-taped over Parise's name on their jerseys because of how he left last season.

Re: trades. (any sports fans here?)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt that will happen here, he has more of a good history than bad here. Although I guess I'm lucky that he's not leaving under unpleasant circumstances like Parise did.

It was especially hard because Parise was captain and led us to the Stanley Cup.

Like I understand trading is part of the game, but some circumstances are harder to bear than others.

Oh I can imagine. And with a guy who's been with your team since he was 18, captained it for the last 10 years and almost got them to a Cup it's not much easier. I've seen a lot of players I really like get traded but this one is going to be the biggest kick in the gut of then all.

I've only recently started to be invested in sports and I don't know how people handle all the constant trades.

Though, I can't stand how the Yankees just basically buy out whoever they want. It's why baseball has left a sour taste in my mouth, so I'm sticking to minor league games for now.

Re: trades. (any sports fans here?)

nayrt

Well you're in luck! Because right now the Yankees can't buy anyone out, because they've basically stopped spending money. It's pretty funny. (although, yes, it's basically true that money gives a huge advantage in baseball, unfortunately)

In terms of getting used to trades - I think it's part of a larger thing, which is just getting used to all the money things and all the business things that are so much a part of the game these days. If you're a sports fan you kind of have to come to terms with free agency, payrolls, salary tax calculations in NFL and NBA, trades, lockouts and labor negotiations in all American sports, marketing deals. All this financial stuff. The status of loans and the financial capacity of owners in European soccer. If you're going to be a fan of sports in this day and age, you have to come to terms with, in a word, reality, in a way that people didn't in the past.

And it kind of sucks but I think that, in the end, sports is worth it - I think there's enough moments of drama and enough extraordinary moments of human excellence and enough moments of joy and enough beauty to make it worth following - because in the moments when someone does something amazing and spontaneous, all the money, and the whole system, and all the media bullshit, and the whole machinery that surrounds sports - that all ceases to matter. At least for me, sports is able to transcend all that bullshit, and that's ultimately what makes it worth following.

You get used to it after a while. It's easier to follow your favourite players with the internet and stuff like GameCenter if you choose, but after all my years (..23?) of following hockey I've never been so depressed over a trade. Haha. .. :(

I'm very sad Torii Hunter's no longer with my Angels. :( He's still got a few decent years of play left, he wanted to end his career with them, and he's just such a positive presence in the clubhouse.

But we unloaded Vernon Wells this week! Have fun, Yankees! :D

Heh, Vernon wells. I remember when he was a blue jay. ;) anything that makes the Yankees hopefully suck more is very welcome.

Best thing Vernon Wells did last year was break his stupid thumb 'cos then we called up Trout!

The Vernon Wells trade is never going to stop being funny (even if it kind of makes a twisted sort of sense for the Yankees). It's still kind of making me smile right now.

I'm sorry, anon. =( I would be pretty depressed if Messi ever left Barcelona, especially if he left for a team I really hate, so I can imagine that feeling.

I felt like someone punched me in the stomach when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was signed onto Real Madrid, but at least he didn't stay there long.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, his contract ends this summer so I doubt that whatever team he ends up at will keep him beyond that. He'll be a rental player - but I'm not sure he'll come back to my home team afterwards. :(

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
now they've scratched him from tonight's game (hes never scratched fyi) and not announcing a trade until tomorrow.

Selfishly: I'm kind of pissed off they'd drag it out like this.

Who's the player, anon?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
not OP but I'm fairly certain it's Jarome Iginla

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Good guess! Although I guess I gave up a trillion hints. XD

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha well it wasn't that hard given that there's essentially only one sport which is both actively being played and in which trades are permitted (NFL and MLB haven't started playing yet, NBA is past the trade deadline, transfer window is closed in soccer and also soccer doesn't really do trades so much)

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Jarome iginla in Calgary. Honestly the Flames should rebuild anyway and should have ages ago but it still sucks.

UGH I was so mad when the Toronto Raptors traded Jose Calderone away because he did so much for the team, but we got Rudy Gay for him and he fits the team a lot more. Even I can admit that we needed Gay to get the ball rolling. It still hurts that my former favourite was taken away from my home team, you know?

Yeah, that's what it feels like right now. And judging by what we're rumoured to be getting back, I'm not sure it'll be worth it, but when there's prospects involved you never know.
