Reversed sexual harassment?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I was in the break room for lunch at work today, and a girl came in from her lunch break and was chatting with a few of the guys there. She had an iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts, and at some comment that I didn't catch, she held it down near her crotch at an angle, and said, "Wanna sip?"

I get that it was a joke, and tbh, I'm not even sure the guys cottoned on to what she was insinuating, but all I could think was, "Wow. If a guy did that, he'd be fired for sexual harassment so fast..." But because it was a girl saying it to some guys, apparently it's okay? It felt...really awkward. Just, y'know, having witnessed it. :|a

also, I'm the anon from the other day with sitcom characters for department coworkers. hi. all my coworkers are strange ._.

There's no such thing as "reversed sexual harassment". There's sexual harassment, period.

This. That's workplace-inappropriate behavior in any direction.

Echoing what others said, there is no "reverse" sexual harassment -- anyone can sexual harass anyone else, regardless of gender. If you felt uncomfortable by your co-worker's comments and gestures you could report it as sexual harassment. I would if she continues to do stuff like that

The sociological definition of racism is completely, hilariously false because you can make a completely idiotic parallel with something else entirely!

Huurrrrrrrrrrrr.

Re: Reversed sexual harassment?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
There's not a single sociological definition of racism, lets not suggest that bruv.

Actually reading the literature which is something most SJWs or slacktivist feminist are incapable of, would quickly make it apparent that the meaning you're pretending is used, is actually encapsulated by the term 'institutional racism'.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
And that means it's hilariously false!

Huuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hurrrrrrr.

na

What is "the literature"? I want to become well-read, but even by going to libraries and doing my own research, how I supposed to already know what I can and can't discount as useless or official information?

Re: Reversed sexual harassment?

But how do you feel about same-sex sexual harassment?

Re: Reversed sexual harassment?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Regardless of sex, if it makes you feel uncomfortable, even if it's not directed at you, it's not OK. I think people don't realize how sexual harassment works. My coworkers do things like that a lot, and generally we tend to laugh it off, but I don't think they realize that if a certain kind of person comes along and hears or witnesses things like that, we could all get in trouble.

I don't want my coworkers to hate me, so I never say anything but I do hate all the dirty jokes and insinuations a small group tend to do everyday (and they're so loud about it). I usually eye roll in my mind, but I think my boss is aware that it gets on my nerves. He's kind of made a few small comments to me about it all every now and again when we're talking, but I think we have a mutual understanding that we should just let everyone have their fun since he and I are a bit more liberal than some other coworkers and they tend to get quiet when he and I get into discussions about gun control, legalization of marijuana (yeah, I live in Colorado), same sex marriage, health care reform, and all that good stuff.

You can watch "The Office". LOL When I have a day where I think, "I think I saw this topic covered in an episode of 'The Office,'" I watch it and feel better.

You have a perfectly good reason to say something to HR about it. Make sure you write down everything that happened, including time and location, and do this any time she or anyone else makes you uncomfortable.

Someone else who was there may have made a statement, but wanted to be discreet.

And yeah, drop the "reversed" thing. Kind of unfortunate.

Re: Reversed sexual harassment?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Like everyone else is saying there's no such thing as "reverse sexual harassment" just as there's no "reverse racism". Sexual harassment is sexual harassment and racism is racism, period. "Reverse sexual harassment" would be...NOT sexually harassing someone I guess?

But yeah, regardless of who's sexually harassing who and whatever their genders are, that's not cool.

If they were her friends she was at a level of closeness between them that all parties were used to those kinds of jokes, I'd say she wasn't sexually harassing them. It would be the same thing if it was the other way around, if it was a guy with close female friends who were used to and comfortable with that kind of humor. I know there are some times when my best guy friend has told certain jokes that made me laugh but then I thought "Geez, if any other guy said something like this I would slap him in the face."

However. Even if they are close friends and the guys are okay with that, it's not really appropriate for work, and it's especially not okay if it was in front of you and made you uncomfortable. :/

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't quite think the title through on this one >>; Sorry about that - I didn't mean to cause any wank with it. (I was thinking "reverse" in terms of what people normally think of (especially in regards to this particular gesture), not what actually constitutes sexual harassment.)

I've barely been at this job two weeks, so I don't...really feel comfortable taking things like this to HR because I could see that it was meant as a joke and, yeah, it probably wasn't work-place appropriate, but I also don't want to be known as that whiny little newbie. The job's only seasonal for now and I'd like to be considered for a permanent position, so I don't...really want to ruin my shot at that. I mean, if it does continue and get gross, no matter who's involved, I probably will report it. I do like our HR manager, so I'm not actually afraid to say anything to her if it's something that's clearly inappropriate rather than just possibly being an ill-conceived joke.

It's been a while since I've had to properly interact with the real world, and I don't ever really know if the internet has made me oversensitive to these things, or if I'm just more aware, or what. And I'm pretty easy-going most of the time, and I'd rather my superiors have that impression of me and subsequently take me more seriously if I do report something, rather than getting reports about every little things that rubs me the wrong way :/

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think the internet has made a lot of people oversensitive about a lot of things. It's OK. As long as comments like that aren't directed at you, I'd just lay low.

Re: Reversed sexual harassment?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most definitely. Girl can totally sexually harass. As long as it's unwanted and sexual, it's sexual harassment.

In other marginally related and not so exciting news, one of the videos I had to watch for staff training was over sexual harassment (and definitely acknowledged that girls can sexually harass, too, if you're wondering.)

Re: Reversed sexual harassment?

She'd be fired if she did that where I work because my company's zero tolerance sexual harassment policy is gender blind. As it should be.
