If it makes you feel better it seems the majority of fandom feels this way. A lot of people disliked Mako because of the way he treated Asami and how he never seemed remorseful about it. I personally can't stand his character cause of it. If he had shown he felt BAD about what happened then it'd be one thing but his whole excuse of "Things are crazy right now" was so lame and stupid. People making mistakes and hurting someone's feelings happen, but to have a character A.) not acknowledge that he messed up whatsoever and B.) continue his current relationship despite knowing he likes someone else while trying to make the character a heroic hero is just bad storytelling. Tenzin I can let slide a bit more, as him and Lin are still good friends, which makes me believe they had a relatively clean break and he treats her with an enormous amount of respect, unlike how Mako treats Asami.

TLDR: Mako sucks. I really hope they show him give a REAL apology to Asami in the second season and experiencing some sort of guild on how he dragged her feelings through the mud.

Like seriously when I was in high school my friends never ever made romantic mistakes! Kissing only happened in the context of committed relationships, there were no gray areas, and everyone met their Life Partner by sophomore year.

While I totally agree with that, my issue with the show wasn't the fact that Mako made a mistake but that he showed no remorse or guilt over it. Having more than one romance is fine but Mako was initiating a romance with Korra while he was with another person, and didn't even apologize when Asami openly confronted him about it, instead he got mad because his brother told her. It would have been great if they had used it to show him mature over it but they didn't. They just kind of passed it off like "well he was supposed to be with Korra all along, no big deal yknow" and that bothered me.

Truthfully I feel the show would have benefited a lot better if they had scrapped the whole love triangle and just made Asami a long time friend/fan of the brothers.

idc if the writers wanted to turn everyone into a slut, but they could at least have written it well. As it is, it's a lazy narrative mess.

Yeah, pretty much this. It just came across as the writers being incredibly unaware of how they were portraying their own characters. Something I sort of expect in, say, fanfic, but when you're getting paid to write, I expect a little more quality.

Mako was so much better when he was a Mama Duck to Bolin. I really didn't like "smooth with the ladies" Mako, especially when Bolin is SO ADORABLE. I really don't know if they knew what they were doing with Mako.

I honestly don't think they knew what they were doing with the majority of the new "Avatar Team". After rewatching the show I enjoy Asami's character and her story a lot more than the first time around, but poor Bolin barely got any development and neither did Mako outside of his relationship with his two ladies. As much as I love Lin and Tenzin, I wish they had spent more time developing the brothers, especially their friendship with Korra instead of diving right into the romance.

I completely agree, I just think because of Mako's romance angle he was even more inconsistent which really put me off him (and I was prone to like him off the bat! even if his VA is apparently a dick). Like Bolin was adorable, but we really need more out of him and Korra and Mako... they didn't really become Team Avatar as tightly as I would have enjoyed.

+1. I feel the show would have been so much better if they hadn't done the love triangle at all and made Asami a good friend/fan of the brothers. The love triangle just seemed so unnecessary and pointless. If they had used it to show character growth that'd be one thing but it was just sort of...there. I would have liked it a lot more had they done like the original Avatar and developed a strong friendship that the romance could have built off of.

I hadn't heard that about his VA but that makes it even better haha. What did you hear that from?

It bugged me even more because it took away from Bolin's character. We all watched the second episode and were pleasantly surprised that he wasn't a goofy joke character, but actually a really charming guy.

And then he became the goofy joke character and was pushed entirely to the background.

For example, how interesting would it have been if he had sided with Korra during the fight they had about Asami's father? Did he even have an opinion on the whole thing?+

I don't think he did. I don't think he really had an opinion about anything except to make a joking comment about it. Bolin is like Sokka done wrong. Sokka was comic relief too but there was so much more to him than cracking jokes and being silly.
