I think this is one of those cases where one person used it and then people copied it and then there were arguments over how big of an insult it is and what it means exactly and if it makes any sense to use at all ...

Which is typical of the Thor fandom. Ideas are cannibalized all over the place especially when it comes to the original comics/mythology/viking culture. So there's a lot of stuff like ergi, intersex jotun, and weird characterization of minor characters that becomes fanon.
