"I don't care what type of evidence or testimony is out there... comic books are for kids."

Even the ones with a big red "FOR 18+ ONLY" warning on it? Are you kidding me? That's terrifyingly ignorant, and I don't even like shota/loli. This reminds me of idiot parents who let their kids buy adult video games because "lol animated characters must mean it's okay" and then freak the fuck out when they walk past the television one day and see what's actually in it. God forbid we require people to actually heed warnings, instead, let's declare an entire art form kid-friendly and get upset at any participation of adults with adult interests in it.

I know. I think it's dumb as fuck. And did you read the link? It gets worse even: "The third case is the Chris Handley case, which was a very hot topic in the community a while back. Handley was a model citizen according to Brownstein: ex-navy, no criminal record, and aside from manga his other hobby was bible study. Handley had a delivery of manga intercepted by the postal inspector. Its contents got him followed home from the post office and arrested; his entire collection was permanently seized.

Handley pled guilty to avoid jail and was forced to take mental health counseling and prohbited from both anime/manga and internet chat. The argument was that all manga was obscene, and that while not illegal, his possession of this material indicated “sexual deviancy”.

The seven pornographic lolicon books that got Handley arrested were:

-Unfinished school girl (Mikansei Seifuku Shoujo)
-I (heart) Doll
-Kemono for Essential 3
-Otonari Kazoku
-Eromon
-Kono Man_ ga Sugoi
-Doll Labyrinth

The final case was that of Ryan Matheson, who was present at the panel to tell his story himself. The 25-year-old computer programmer was taking his first trip out of the country to Canada, when customs stopped to inspect the many gadgets he was carrying, most notably his iPad and laptop. An anime wallpaper piqued their interest, and they searched his computer for hours.

Ultimately Matheson was detained without a reason given, denied access to counsel, and jailed in a cell without food and only a concrete slab to sleep on. On the way to the prison, he was told “If you're raped here, it doesn't count!”.

The image that brought this about was a parody image of “The 48 Sumo Positions”, done as, of course, “The 48 Sex Positions.” The characters were tiny super-deformed images in a style familiar to most manga readers. The inspectors believed the characters to be four-year-olds.

The other images were a doujinshi of “a fantasy scenario between non-human characters”: whether it was erotic in nature was unspecified by the panelist, but that description implies very much that it was.

With the help of the CBLDF, Matheson fought the charges, and after several different prosecutors and two years' time-- during which he was barred from using a computer except at one specific job, which then cut his hours-- the charges were dropped. Brownstein credits the fund's legal “direwolves” with fighting hard for Matheson: however, wolves cost money and Matheson is still in debt to the tune of $70,000 for their services. The fund has been able to pay off $34,000 for him thus far.

Brownstein notes that the relatively happy ending of the Matheson case does not mean that this fight is over: for example, “manga” itself is often used as a code word for pornography. "

Oh, yeah, manga's porno. *rolls eyes* it's just another word for comics, but comics are for kids, right? *rolls eyes harder*

I am never taking my laptop w/it's fandom stuff on it anywhere unless it's doing that encrypted undetectable thing (http://www.csoonline.com/article/699180/three-steps-to-properly-protect-your-personal-data?page=2). It'll be backed up to an unconnected external hard drive and deleted off my laptop. And I fraking own Demon Beast and U. :( I've lost interest in a lot of my manga and anime, but I'm extremely paranoid about selling it and I don't wanna throw it out. Most of it's really innocent, a few is hentai, 1 item is, by accident (doujin--didn't realize it was shota--was just starting in anime and not familiar w/the terms) shota. Damn it. :(

Dude, this is right after a series of comments about how the laws are even worse in England.

But the third case took place in Canada. Reading comprehension for the lose, apparently.

You are trying really hard to stir the Americans-are-the-worst wank tonight.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Canada and Australia are worse about it.

But you've already outed yourself as a bigot, so whatevs.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I am like 100% sure that "making drawn child porn illegal" (or even extraordinarily overzealous enforcement of same) is not the reason that "everyone hates our country and wishes it would get obliterated already."

Maybe that's true of you, in which case you're a bad person in addition to being an idiot and a bigot. But I'm pretty sure it has very little to do with anti-Americanism more broadly. I'm fairly certain that no Islamic terrorists are fulminating in favor of drawn depictions of underage sex. I am fairly certain that no leftist French politicians are raging against the dominance of prudish American sexual mores. I'm fairly certain that there is a laundry list of things that people find more objectionable, rightly or wrongly - our culture, our export of our culture, our tendency towards unthinking arrogance, our imperialist foreign policy, our financial system, the prevalence of religious fundamentalism in our country. But I am damn sure that it's not actually about loli or shota.

It's not the bigotry that gets me. I don't like the bigotry, but I can handle it. It's the stupidity that's killing me.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-02 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I am like 100% sure that the "hurr durr comics etc. are for kids" notion that comes from american culture is a perfectly legitimate reason to add to your laundry list. Also the arrogance and the ignorance. See the Matheson but especially the Texas vs Castillo cases, in which no "drawn depictions of underage sex" at all were involved.

As for the loli/shota thing, do whatever you want within your borders, but don't go around pushing your views on others. I don't like it nor approve of it in the least and I want nothing to do with it, but I'm still glad my country is intelligent enough to separate fiction from reality.

Jesus fucking christ. Never ever bringing my laptop anywhere near another country. May as well buy an extra one that I can use over seas, assuming I ever go over seas...

If you're worried about throwing it out because someone might see it, you could shred it.
