As someone who was friends with an overly-invested-in-a-show-and-pairing-because-of-legit-mental-issues tin hatter, I can say from what I observed that they either become less invested in the show/pairing when they get some real help for their problems, or they move onto a new obsession. Sometimes both at the same time. People with issues over investing in fandom are usually distracting themselves from problems in their actual lives, after all (and I'm not excluding myself from that, btw, having been on the verge of over investment myself a few times).

I've never know someone who treely ruly in their heart of hearts believed in a tinhat RPF pairing though, so who knows. That might be an entirely different kettle of delightfully cray cray fish.
