You know, for a while there in the Harry Potter fandom there were quite a few Harry/Hermione shippers who got very insistent about it.

Since the last movie, though, they seem to have pretty much just quietly vanished like a puff of smoke. I wonder where they've all headed off to, fandom-wise.

I see them still persisting on tumblr. I've noticed that quite a few of them have latched onto Katniss/Gale from The Hunger Games.

I've done this. Went through old wank reports and then went searching for where the major players are now. Usually either they disappear (I suspect just under a new name) or, perhaps not so surprising, they've moved on to new and fresh wank.

I'm fascinated by this too! I wonder how much of it is really, truly, believing, and how much of it is just thinking life is "better" when you believe. It's worth it just to constantly argue and stand up for your fantasy with other people who believe it, especially when your fantasy fits so well into your fanfic fantasies...

Though some of those Larry shippers seem completely sincere. It's like the next tinhat evolution.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always wondered the same thing, and I actually believe that they just want their fanfics to become real life...
But I also always wondered how "life is better" if they believe their otp are hiding their relationship from the world? I mean, this is quite a shitty situation to be in, this is real people we're talking about, don't they just want happiness for them?
I guess I'll just be forever confused.

Saying Larry shippers are an "evolution" of any kind is giving them too much credit, I think. Just because it's even easier for them to harass their ~OTP~ on Twitter, it doesn't make them any different from the Domlijah tinhats at heart.

I think the same way about Chuck/Blair shippers with Gossip Girl as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
they find a new otp to tinhat, of course

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha pretty much, yes.
When you look through the wank archives, you see a lot of the same names pop-up in different fandoms over the years.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think when you're that disconnected from reality, it's not that hard to move on to something else.

I've wondered this too occasionally, especially when looking back on some of the nuttier people from fandom_wank. I suppose they quit the fandom and move to another one. Or stop shipping in that fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm excited to see how the Larry Stylinson shippers will react ten years from now when those two fail to come out of the closet and declare their undying love like those poor girls so badly want.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But will one direction still exist by then? Maybe we'll never hear of them again...
I'll guess they'll just move on to a new shiny otp.

Monaghan occasionally has tinhatters show up on his Twitter to this day, although they're usually DomOrli, DomBilly, or DomViggo shippers rather than DomLijah. They're not that common, though - I suspect the majority went on to other RPS ships (J2 is a prime candidate) once the shine was off of the LotR movies.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty damn sure they just find two new white dudes that are touchy-feely with each other to obsess over.

However, there is a brief mourning period. As Merlin has just ended, the Brolin shippers are currently trying to reconcile the fact that Bradley James has fled to America with a new photos of Colin Morgan going to some movie premieres with a (gasp!) actual woman!

And since I swear I once saw a post that insisted as soon as the show (and Arwen) was over, Bradley and Colin would openly declare their love for each other (because fictional ships prevent real ones...???) they're having a bit of trouble understanding just what's going on.

It would be interesting to see a "where are they now" on some of those old wanks.
msilverstar: (they say)

[personal profile] msilverstar 2013-03-31 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
- some of them got over it, wrote some sheepish posts, and are now very nice to be around

- some of them are still very quietly shipping Domlijah, using the reason that they're not married or anything (that doesn't work for the Orlando shippers).

- some of them went off to other fandoms to spread their craziness

- some of them left fandom altogether or at least changed their usernames and friends

So, pretty much what anyone would expect, ten years on

I'm imagining this comment as a montage at the end of a film, a la Remember the Titans.

Now that you've said it, I sometimes wonder what happened to those giant fandoms where fans would produce fan content by the truckload every day. I know they've probably moved on to other fandoms, but still I wonder what happened to the crazy fans who loved to ship and the fan-haters who love to hate.

The thing that muddies the tinhatting waters is that Hollywood is indeed filled to the brim with egregious closet cases.

I wonder the same exact thing about so many people. Not just ship wankers, but wankers in general.

Like, where the hell is msscribe because she vanished off of the face of the earth! I want to know her fandom movements, if there are any. Is she on tumblr? Is she in fandom at all? I AM DYING TO KNOW. And seeing old wankers pop up in the world amuses me to no end. Like two days ago I found out that Aja of HP wank fame now writes for the Daily Dot about fandom and surprise surprise STILL causes wank :D Warmed my heart to see her fighting anon at yuletide_coal this year as well as nagging at the Hockey RPF fans.

But yeah where did the HMS harmony people go and did they learn or are they now stanning for a shiny new thing? I want them to write autobiographies "My Life in Fandom" or some shit.

Idk sometimes wank reminds me just how much I love fandom as weird as that is. People are so strange and I love it.

As someone who was friends with an overly-invested-in-a-show-and-pairing-because-of-legit-mental-issues tin hatter, I can say from what I observed that they either become less invested in the show/pairing when they get some real help for their problems, or they move onto a new obsession. Sometimes both at the same time. People with issues over investing in fandom are usually distracting themselves from problems in their actual lives, after all (and I'm not excluding myself from that, btw, having been on the verge of over investment myself a few times).

I've never know someone who treely ruly in their heart of hearts believed in a tinhat RPF pairing though, so who knows. That might be an entirely different kettle of delightfully cray cray fish.
