That's one of the most adorable secrets I've ever seen.

This, so much! :D

My stepmother is getting into Doctor Who, mostly because her granddaughters are into it. My dad is still resisting, though. We'll get him there eventually! :D

I really don't get why 'my mom and grandma are DW fans' is a secret. What?
intrigueing: (tww: 20 hours in america)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-04-03 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god this is so cute I can't even. <3 Even though I personally would actually die of embarrassment if my mother or grandmother got into fandom like that. My mother's Downton Abbey obsession feels weird enough.

[personal profile] aubry 2013-04-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, OP - don't be embarrassed. C'mon. Part of why they even love DW is probably connected to the fact that you introduced them to it and they love you. Enjoy their squee. Life is way too short to be cynical about other peoples' enthusiasm. You'll have way more fun if you own this three-generational fandom blitz and get yourself a Cyberman mug.

(A Cyberman is a thing, right? I don't Doctor Who.)

I can understand this, I guess. Some shows I like to watch with other people, and if we have a tradition of doing so, I can get a bit disappointed if they watch it when I'm not there. Since you specifically introduced them to it just so you'd have someone to watch it with, it makes sense that you're upset that they're enjoying it without you, especially as you're unable to catch up.

I don't really know how you could make the situation better. Maybe just try not to feel so embarrassed, though, or if you do, make sure they don't pick up on it - they're enjoying the show and expressing it, and that's what you did when you tried to get other people into it.

Also, they'll eventually run out of episodes to watch, so maybe you can catch up slowly...?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... Good that your mom has a fandom, I guess?

My mom got waaaay into Harry Potter before I even read the books. It was weird, but she got over it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This is adorable.

And yup, you sound selfish

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Get a logo mug or one with your favorite Doctor on it or whatever. You catch up eventually and then you can rewatch favorite episodes together or just talk about them.

My mom loves Doctor Who. She was so happy when this season started. She bought us both Tardis mugs and I have a pair of Dalek socks from her ♥

I'm genuinely more entertained by her love than embarrassed. Her love doesn't hurt anyone and I've gotten some pretty cool merch from her obsession.

awww that is adorable! I got my mom into LOST in a similar fashion, and then if I missed an episode she would always accidentally spoil it and I'd get all mad LMAO

Why is it embarrassing? So they like it - so what? Get a grip. My mom loves 'Castle' and 'White Collar'. She thinks they boys are cute and the shows are fun and she's enthusiastic about them if you get her talking.

Not even a *tiny bit* embarrassed about that.

oi, I can understand your frustration, OP, but I'm also laughing a bit because Be Careful What You Wish For strikes again. :p

Also ---- you were gone for 2 weeks but had no communication with them? ~

Eh, no matter. Perhaps they went ahead and watched all those seasons wuith you because they assumed (since you are into it) that you'd watched everything already anyhow?

That's adorable. Man, your mom and grandmother found something fun to squee about, don't rain on their parade.

The *sighs* at the end makes you sound pretty whiny.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so jealous. Not about DW, but I just wish my Mom would be enthusiastic (not even fannish, just genuinely excited) about something. Anything.

Most science fiction fans would do cartwheels if their (the fans') parents shared their fondness for an intellectual property. Consider yourself lucky!

I think it was kind of inconsiderate for your folks to watch ahead without you, since you were doing it together and you weren't even gone that long...

BAHAHAHAHA, my mother started watching anime with me one summer and by the end of it all she had bought, like, ALL THE MANGA.

It was her that got me into the show that's featured in my icon.

She's even cosplayed.

I am not embarrassed in the slightest because really, who cares? Anyone who'd be a shit about it is not worth my time anyway.

This happened with my mother and Merlin, but it was mainly just adorable to watch her geeking out.
