After a certain point, I think Rodney was probably the main reason anyone watched the show.

I always found Kavanagh to be proof that no matter how right or smart you are, unless you're not a complete obnoxious jackass no one's going to listen to you. Rodney was at least endearing in his obnoxiousness on SG:A, so they listened to him--but Kavanagh had this quality that seemed to grate on everyone, so they didn't listen to him. (Also, the Stargate program has never historically cared for half the regulations he complained about Elizabeth breaking.)

Quite a few people were still watching despite the overuse of Rodney by the end. He was the writers favorite and they just couldn't seem to write for anyone else. It was getting extremely annoying. A great character in moderate doses, his overuse turned some of us a bit sour.

DH kind of hit

Oops, David H kind of hits you over the head with his acting, so you think it's good. But there's no subtlety. His portrayal of a woman when he was in Cadman's body was almost insulting. I liked the character and DH but I could never understand why people thought the character was so brilliant. I think people identified with the geek/nerd Rodney and didn't look beyond that to see what a jerk he could really be to those around him.

I think most of us (except the parts of fandom who did extreme Rodney whump) were aware what kind of bastard McKay is. He's one of those characters that are really entertaining on screen but you'd probably punch if you met them.

No almost about the insulting. Terrible acting job on DH's part.

And Rodney would be a nightmare to work with in real life. Someone would have him up in front of HR at least once a week for either harassment or hostile workplace environment.

Actually, I watched to the bitter end, and by season five Rodney was my most hated character.

He was never my favourite, but I liked him in season 1 and 2. It was all downhill from there.
